Alex Palou produced another statement qualifying run at World Wide Technology Raceway as the IndyCar championship leader beat David Malukas and Kyle Kirkwood to pole

-

Alex Palou delivered another ruthless reminder of his IndyCar dominance as the Bommarito 500 qualifying results were confirmed at World Wide Technology Raceway, with the championship leader taking pole by a commanding margin.

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver was the final car to run in qualifying and made full use of the clear benchmark in front of him, producing a two lap average speed of 174.353mph in the No. 10 Honda. It was enough to beat David Malukas by more than one mph and secure another NTT P1 Award in a season that continues to bend heavily in Palou’s direction.

The result gives Palou his 17th career IndyCar pole, his fifth pole from the opening nine races of the 2026 season and his fourth consecutive pole in the last month. That made him the first driver to claim four straight IndyCar poles since Will Power in 2011.

“The team I have around me is incredible,” Palou said. “My car was on rails today; it was incredible. It’s the place that I’ve struggled the most so far (in my career), so hopefully (this speed) will continue tomorrow.”

Palou entered the weekend with a 62 point championship lead over Kyle Kirkwood, and his qualifying performance only strengthened the sense that the reigning champion is controlling the season. His best previous finish at World Wide Technology Raceway was fourth in 2024, with the 1.25 mile oval the only venue on the 2026 calendar where he had raced before without finishing inside the top three.

“I knew this morning that our car was super quick,” Palou said. “But I did not really expect to get the pole here today, honestly. It’s just incredible. Super proud and can’t wait for tomorrow.”

Bommarito 500 qualifying results led by Alex Palou

Malukas continued his impressive debut season with Team Penske by qualifying second in the No. 12 Chevrolet, setting a two lap average of 173.244mph at one of his strongest tracks.

Kirkwood, who won at World Wide Technology Raceway in 2025, qualified third for Andretti Global with a 173.206mph average. He will share the second row with Felix Rosenqvist, the 2026 Indianapolis 500 winner, who put Meyer Shank Racing fourth on 172.953mph.

Scott McLaughlin completed the top five for Team Penske, while Marcus Armstrong made it two Meyer Shank Racing cars inside the top six. Scott Dixon qualified seventh for Chip Ganassi Racing, ahead of five time World Wide Technology Raceway winner Josef Newgarden in eighth.

What the Bommarito 500 grid means for Palou

The 260 lap Bommarito 500 gives Palou another chance to turn qualifying control into a major championship blow, particularly with Kirkwood starting third and still trying to reduce the gap at the top of the standings.

The front of the grid also leaves Team Penske well placed, with Malukas, McLaughlin and Newgarden all starting inside the top eight. Newgarden’s starting spot is especially notable given his record at World Wide Technology Raceway, where he leads all drivers with five victories.

For Palou, though, the equation is clear. He has turned one of his least productive circuits into another showcase of raw speed, and the rest of the field now faces the task of stopping the championship leader from converting pole into another decisive result.
