Kyle Kirkwood delivered a dominant performance at the 2026 Freedom 250 Grand Prix, controlling the race from the front to take victory for Andretti Global and keep his IndyCar championship hopes alive.

Kirkwood‘s victory was his seventh career IndyCar win and his second of the 2026 season, with six of those victories now coming on street circuits. The American driver led 128 of the 147 laps around the Washington D.C. circuit, completing one of the most commanding performances of the season.

Christian Lundgaard finished second for Arrow McLaren, crossing the line 3.0906 seconds behind Kirkwood, while Will Power completed the podium for Andretti Global after a late charge saw him finish 4.1842 seconds behind the winner.

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix featured multiple caution periods, strategic battles and several incidents throughout the 147-lap contest, but Kirkwood consistently remained the driver to beat.

The early laps featured close racing at the front, with Kirkwood, Palou and Scott McLaughlin battling for position before the first caution period interrupted the action.

After settling into the lead, Kirkwood built a significant advantage through the middle portion of the race, repeatedly stretching his gap while managing traffic and pit strategy.

The race changed several times through the pit cycles, with different strategies bringing drivers into contention. Kirkwood remained composed throughout, returning to the lead after each round of stops and eventually pulling clear of the field.

Championship leader Alex Palou endured a difficult afternoon after starting from pole position. A penalty and later crash ended his hopes of securing the title in Washington D.C., with the Chip Ganassi Racing driver finishing two laps down in 20th place.

The race was also affected by multiple incidents, including a major crash involving David Malukas and Sting Ray Robb, while Scott McLaughlin suffered a heavy impact late in the race after attempting to challenge for the lead.

Lundgaard and Power complete podium

While Kirkwood dominated at the front, the battle behind remained competitive. Christian Lundgaard secured second place after another strong performance for Arrow McLaren, finishing ahead of Will Power, who recovered from 12th on the grid to take the final podium position.

Marcus Ericsson finished fourth for Andretti Global, while Kyffin Simpson completed the top five for Chip Ganassi Racing. Nolan Siegel finished sixth, followed by Scott Dixon in seventh and Josef Newgarden in eighth.

Caio Collet secured ninth place for A.J. Foyt Enterprises, while Romain Grosjean rounded out the top 10.

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix victory gives Kirkwood another major result during the 2026 IndyCar season and keeps him firmly in championship contention heading into the final stages of the campaign.
