Teamwork makes the dream work as Penske sweeps Road America podium

The Penske team came together just to ensure all three drivers could take the green flag, with Will Power then taking his first win in two years

It’s often the individuals who get all the glory in motorsport but Team Penske reminded everyone in IndyCar how important teamwork can be to dominate at Road America.

None of the Captain’s cars managed to take pole in a wet-to-dry qualifying session and Josef Newgarden ended up giving his crew a long rebuild job following his enormous shunt at the kink.

The 95G impact destroyed his Dallara but members of Will Power and Scott McLaughlin’s team all chipped in to repair the American’s car and still make it as fast as it was before.

You could argue it was even faster in the race, but he wasn’t able to take a remarkable comeback victory as Power executed the overcut on the final stop to win, with McLaughlin having to settle for third.

Over the 55 laps of the magnificent Road America track, no team or driver got close to the Penske trio in an ominous message heading into the second half of the campaign.

How Ganassi’s race fell apart

Alex Palou was the only Chip Ganassi Racing driver to achieve any kind of decent result at Elkhart Lake as things quickly went south for Penske’s biggest rivals.

It all started at the first turn as Linus Lundqvist, who secured his first IndyCar pole on Saturday, slightly out-braked himself but the issues came from behind.

Teammate Marcus Armstrong followed the Swede deep and hit the number eight car, spinning both around and ending any chance of a finish in the higher echelons.

While that incident was one of the team’s making, Kyffin Simpson’s was a huge slice of bad luck after the rookie reached round two of qualifying for the first time.

As he battled Christian Rasmussen, the Dane braked too late and hit the back of Simpson’s car at the final turn, punting him into the barrier and out of the race.

Scott Dixon was doing well until he put the alternate tyres on and the extreme wear the red-walled Firestones suffered meant he plummeted out of reasonable contention.
