Hamilton makes bold Mercedes prediction on team prospects after he leaves for Ferrari

Mercedes won 15 F1 world championships between 2021 and 2022 but have only won one grand prix since then

Lewis Hamilton is certain Mercedes will win a world championship after his exit for Ferrari at the end of the 2024 Formula 1 season, and added he’ll be proud of the part he played in that triumph even when he’s not part of the team.

The 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix marks the start of Hamilton‘s final season at Mercedes after a 26-year relationship, 11 campaigns at Brackley and 16 championships shared between them, after the bombshell news that he’ll replace Carlos Sainz at Ferrari from 2025.

But despite enjoying the most successful partnership in F1 history, Mercedes have won just one race since new regulations came into effect in 2022 and are expected to trail Red Bull and Ferrari once again at the start of 2024.

“I know this team is going to win another championship and I feel I’ll be proud to know that I’ve been a part of it,” Hamilton told the media in Bahrain.

“Because a lot of the things we’ve put in place in terms of how much more diverse our team is, the processes that we go through, in the long haul I will always be a part of that process and that development this team has gone through.

“But I’m really looking forward to that new challenge, it’s lots of different emotions that you will experience through that challenge but it’s one that I’m really excited about.”

Hamilton prioritised diversity over ‘difficult’ winter

Hamilton has focussed on making the world of F1 and motor racing more diverse and inclusive particularly since 2020, and has already stated it will be a key cornerstone of his work behind the scenes at Ferrari.

But he added he was working to improve his own team in that regard over the 2023-24 offseason even before his earth-shattering announcement about moving teams.

“I would say it was a difficult winter and a very unusual one,” Hamilton added. “Obviously the winters are getting shorter but just a lot of deep thought throughout December, things going on with management which has taken a lot of time to reshape.

“That’s never an easy process, but it’s all amicable. And now just working on rebuilding my own team.

“I have lots of things that I want to do, and I know exactly what I want to do. So it’s just about finding good people to add into your team, making sure that it’s diverse and so that’s always at the heart of what I try to put in place.”
