Haas have no time for sentimental F1 memories

Kevin Magnussen took a surprise pole as the rain fell in Interlagos

Haas will not be caught at the wheel daydreaming of their pole position at the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix one year on, as they focus on understanding their new VF-23 package according to Gunther Steiner.

Kevin Magnussen’s top-spot finish was one of the big surprises of the whole season as he delivered an excellent first-run Q3 lap before George Russell triggered a red flag and the rain began to fall in Sao Paulo.

The result ensured that nobody had a chance to improve on their times, sparking jubilant scenes in the garage once the team realised they and the Danish driver had achieved a first ever pole position in Formula 1.

12 months later, it remains the highest achievement in the history of the American outfit who star in the ‘Drive To Survive’ series, but whilst they have fond memories it isn’t going to be distracting them from the weekend according to their boss.

“It’s not like something you dwell on,” Steiner said to media. “You’re proud of it when you do it and it’s going into your history, you don’t let that go, but at the end of the week it’s over and you focus on the next one [race].

“It’s such a fast moving sport so there is no time for sentimental memories here. We need to perform tomorrow. Last year was last year, it changes around so quickly. Obviously you’re always proud of it, but it’s not like you’re sitting there every night dwelling.”

Steiner gives progress update on Haas upgrades

At the United States GP, Haas brought a B-spec car that drew from the concept of this year’s fastest team, Red Bull. It saw changes to sidepods, sidepod inlets, engine covers, and the floor of the car as the group looks to get on top of their tyre management problems.

Their debut with the upgrades wasn’t a good one as they had to break parc ferme to change the car thanks to an awful qualifying but at the Mexico City GP they showed more promising speed as Nico Hulkenberg almost nicked a point from rivals.

“I would say we’re a little bit wiser with where it is,” Steiner added. “So hopefully in one hour we can get a good set up going.

“Austin obviously we had the big bumps nobody expected, so we got a little bit of bad luck there.

“Mexico we just didn’t have enough downforce, that was it, maybe we could come out with a lot more and here we should be the window with downforce so again, it’s not easy now.”

Will it rain at the 2023 Brazilian GP?

Fifteen years ago, F1 received it’s most dramatic finish thanks to the heavens opening at Interlagos.

A gamble by Timo Glock to stay out temporarily put Felipe Massa into a championship-winning position before a dramatic penultimate corner overtake saw it disappear as Lewis Hamilton came home to finish fifth and win the crown by just a single point.

Rain is expected to play a part in the weekend but it’s likely that the Sunday race will escape a downpour.

Free Practice 1 for the 2023 Brazilian GP gets underway at 11:30 local time on Sunday, November 3. For British viewers, that is a start of 14:30 whilst for American audiences, the weekend gets underway at 10:30 Eastern Time.
