Speculation surrounding George Russell, Max Verstappen, and Mercedes has dominated headlines as the Formula 1 paddock descends on Silverstone for the 2025 British Grand Prix.

Amid swirling rumours that Verstappen could replace him at Mercedes, Russell delivered a clear and confident message: he expects to remain with the team. In recent days, reports emerged claiming that Max Verstappen was close to agreeing a sensational move from Red Bull to Mercedes, with Italian and Dutch media giving conflicting takes on the likelihood of such a blockbuster transfer.

Despite the noise, Russell maintains that his future remains secure. Speaking to media, including Total-Motorsport.com, at Silverstone, George Russell addressed the speculation directly.

“I mean every team has two seats available, and it’s normal that every team is considering what the future holds and I don’t take that personally because I made it clear from the beginning I’m happy to be teammates with anybody,” Russell explained.

“Of course there’s conversations and rumours and all of these have been pointed towards me but from my side that isn’t going to be the case. I want to continue with Mercedes into the future, the fact is Toto has never let me down.

“He’s always given me his word, and he’s also got to do what’s right for his team, which includes me but also includes the thousands of people who work for Mercedes. For me it’s nothing to worry about because I don’t think I’ll be going anywhere and whoever my teammate will be doesn’t concern me either. Just focusing on the driving.”

Russell Unfazed by Contract Speculation

Russell, who is out of contract at the end of 2025, revealed that he’s been in regular contact with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff amid the flurry of media reports.

“I mean there’s a lot of conversations behind the scenes that are not public and I know where their loyalty lies,” Russell added. “It doesn’t need to be public or broadcasted to everybody.

“We’ve spoken a bit more over the last week because there’s numerous articles and whatnot out there but it doesn’t really change anything on my side because as I said I’m performing better than ever, it’s as simple as that really, performance speaks for everything.”

When pressed on whether he has been in talks with other teams, Russell simply replied, “No.” The 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix winner made it clear that he’s only interested in extending his time at Mercedes.

Despite speculation, George Russell has been one of the standout performers of the 2025 F1 season. Alongside Max Verstappen, he’s been among the most consistent drivers on the grid.

Asked whether the constant rumours were unfair, Russell said, “That’s for you to judge and for me… I feel quite thick-skinned, I don’t really read much news or listen to rumours. I just focus on the facts and focus on the driving. I said it at the beginning of the year, you can have a contract but if you don’t perform you’re out, if you do perform everything sorts itself out.”

Mercedes Faces a Defining Summer

With the summer break approaching and driver market rumours swirling, Mercedes faces a pivotal decision on its 2026 line-up. Toto Wolff has confirmed that the team will make its choice by August, with Russell, Verstappen, and Kimi Antonelli all in the spotlight.

While Verstappen’s future remains uncertain—especially as he navigates a challenging season at Red Bull—Russell is determined to keep his focus firmly on delivering results for Mercedes.

For now, the Silverstone crowd will watch closely as Russell aims to impress at his home Grand Prix—and perhaps silence the rumour mill for good.
