George Russell dreams of 2024 British GP win, but can Mercedes deliver?

Mercedes come into the 2024 British GP on a high after winning in Austria on June 30

George Russell comes into the 2024 British GP as the most recent race winner of an unpredictable Formula 1 season after Max Verstappen and Lando Norris’ dramatic crash in Austria, but does he think he and Mercedes can emerge victorious in Silverstone?

The 26-year-old seemed on course for third place at the Red Bull Ring as he maximised his weekend, but he got the chance to cash in big on Lap 64 when the McLaren and Red Bull cars kissed tyres and left themselves out of contention with punctures.

It gifted him his second ever F1 win and a much needed boost for his Silver Arrows team that went all of the 2023 season without hearing the German national anthem at the end of a race, so does Russell think he and Toto Wolff’s men can kick on to win the 2024 British Grand Prix?

“I think it’s going to be a good fight again this weekend,” Russell told members of the media, including “I think Lando and Max are probably going to be the two guys out in front.

“They’ve looked really fast in the high-speed corners these last couple of races and of course here in Silverstone there’s a lot of high-speed sections, so I expect those guys to be the favorites, but I don’t think I’ll be far behind.”

Mercedes have been historically successful at this race and that’s far from surprising considering it’s on their doorstep, with Silverstone sitting a 10 minutes’ drive from their Brackley factory for aerodynamics and 20 miles away from Brixworth, where they have crafted their incredible engines over the years.

Lewis Hamilton won this race seven times from 2008-2021 under Mercedes power, whilst he stood on the podium in 2022, where he had another chance to win, and again in 2023 showing the longevity of the Silver Arrows’ competitiveness at this track.

Meanwhile for Russell, his best result came with a fifth-place finish in the 2023 event after an unfortunately timed safety car saw his veteran teammate jump him through the pit-stop phase before going on to claim third.

What would Russell’s home British GP win mean?

The British GP is one of the most prestigious races in motorsport to triumph and conquer for any driver, from anywhere, right up alongside the Monaco GP or Italian GP and many legends have won the 52-lap marathon around the Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire.

And with the 2022 Brazilian GP and now the 2024 Austrian GP to his name, Russell has tasted the sweet champagne from climbing to the top step of the podium as a winner, to hear the British national anthem blare out across the speakers, but how would that compare to winning his home event?

“For us, winning any Grand Prix is an incredible feeling,” Russell added. “We both have many to our names, but to win your home Grand Prix is always the one that you dream of.

“I think we’re so fortunate to have Silverstone as our home race because I truly think this weekend is really special for the fans. The amount of support we will have here, they’re proper F1 enthusiasts.

“We came here as kids to watch other F1 races so for sure, will always be special to get that opportunity.”
