Mortara survives late charge to win Round 7 at the Berlin E-Prix

Mortara converted his first ever Formula E pole position into a win at the Berlin E-Prix

    -

Edoardo Mortara produced a masterful display to seal the Formula E Round 7 win at the 2022 Berlin E-Prix, despite a late charge from Jean-Eric Vergne and Stoffel Vandoorne

After bagging his first ever Formula E pole position earlier in the day, Mortara raced off the line and built up a lead before waiting for his rivals to take, and run down their attack modes.

That allowed Mortara to take his first attack mode after with 20 minutes to go, he only dropped to second place and then re-took the lead just one lap later.

Smart attack mode and fan boost usage from Vergne and Vandoorne saw the pair catch to Mortara, but the Venturi man held both off and raced off into the distance to take the victory in Berlin.

“What a day!” Mortara said after the race. “My first pole in Formula E. I was waiting for that for quite some time.

“We were already very happy but this race was amazing – very stressful, obviously because we had different strategies and I had to defend but in the end everything went alright and I’m mega happy.”

    Vandoorne coming through

It was a poor start from Formula E championship leader Vandoorne, who dropped from eighth on the grid to 12th in the opening stages and it looked like he was going to have a tough afternoon.

But, by halfway the Belgian had scythed through the field and was up to sixth on Lap 19.

Then overtakes on Antonio Felix da Costa, Sims and Andre Lotterer saw the Mercedes EQ man into third, before a battle with Vergne ensued, though some excellent defensive driving from the Frenchman meant third was the best Vandoorne could manage.
