Evans: Another disappointing blow to my championship campaign

Jaguar suffered their second pointless race in a row after Mitch Evans and Sam Bird suffered more frustration

-

Mitch Evans had described his penalty at the Cape Town E-Prix as “another disappointing blow” for his championship hopes as he finished 11th in South Africa.

Evans was running in fourth early on but received a drive through penalty for exceeding the power limit.

It has been a frustrating month for Evans after he was taken out by teammate Sam Bird in Hyderabad, meaning he has failed to score points at the last two events.

The Jaguar driver is 66 points behind Formula E championship leader Pascal Wehrlein after five rounds.

“Today was another disappointing blow to my championship campaign,” said Evans.

“We know we have an incredibly fast Jaguar I-TYPE 6 and I haven’t been able to get the points that I feel the team deserve. We’ll try again in Sao Paulo.”

Team principal James Barclay added: “It’s been an incredibly frustrating day again here in Cape Town. The Jaguar I-TYPE 6 has been strong all weekend.

“Mitch was holding fourth place really well and we were managing our pace for later in the race. We need to evaluate why Mitch had an overuse of power.

“For Sam’s side of the garage we’re absolutely gutted. He was driving well, the car was quick and his accident could have been avoided.

“As a championship we need to learn and improve. As a team we have shown in the past that we will give everything to get the cars out of the garage and turn up racing but with that amount of damage it just wasn’t possible today.

“We have a great team, an incredibly quick race car and we will keep striving towards winning.”

Bird didn’t even get to start the race due to damage sustained in a huge qualifying crash at Turn 9.

Edoardo Mortata had an accident at the corner and just seconds later was collected by Bird, with controversy surrounding the timing of the red flags.

It was not clear whether Bird was already going to have a crash of his own before the red flags came out for Mortara‘s stricken car, but the British driver suggested he didn’t see anything from the marshals.

“Due to factors outside of my control, my weekend in Cape Town has been destroyed and it really hurts,” said Bird.

“There should have been a timely red flag today and I’m disappointed that there wasn’t.

“The good news is that the Jaguar I-TYPE 6 is very quick – we’ve seen that in our pace all weekend.”
