Max Verstappen praises Formula E: High talent, exciting to watch

Formula E will race around the famous streets of Monte Carlo this Saturday, a familiar track to Formula 1 and the Monaco Grand Prix with Red Bull driver Max Verstappen hailing the talented drivers on show in the series

Red Bull pair Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez have lauded Formula E for the level of driver talent in the all-electric championship and its exciting racing.

Formula E is in its 10th season and has often been compared to Formula 1, despite their obvious differences in history and technology.

But, several Formula E drivers have previously raced in F1 including Nyck de Vries, Pascal Wehrlein, Stoffel Vandoorne, Jean-Eric Vergne, Lucas di Grassi and Sebastien Buemi.

“What I like about Formula E is that there are quite a lot of good drivers in there,” Verstappen told select members of the press, including Total-Motorsport.com.

“You might have raced them in the past or you’ve seen them around, so the competition is very high. Of course, a couple of my friends are driving in there as well, so I always keep an eye on it. It’s not a category I would like to drive in myself in the future.

“I always enjoy it because the talent in the series is very high and that’s of course what I think also makes it more exciting to watch.”

Perez and Sainz on Formula E

Formula E will race on the same Monaco Circuit layout as F1 this Saturday as the 2024 season reaches its halfway point. They will also head to Shanghai at the end of May on a shortened version of the F1 Chinese Grand Prix circuit.

In recent years, drivers in junior single-seater categories such as Formula 2 and Formula 3 have made the jump to Formula E, rather than F1, which Perez and Ferrari‘s Carlos Sainz approve of

“I fully agree with Max,” said Perez when asked his opinion on Formula E. “I think it’s great to have a series that gives an opportunity to drivers that cannot be in Formula 1 or other series, just to have another series where they can earn their money, live from the passion.

“I think it’s great to have that. I think as a category itself, we have to respect what they’re focusing into. And I think they’re doing a very good job with the series, so well done.”

Sainz added: “I’m just happy that this category [Formula E] exists because there’s so much talent, that for one reason or another couldn’t make it to Formula 1 that had the talent to be at a very similar level to the 20 drivers that you see today in Formula 1.

“Having that category just gives an opportunity to those other 20 drivers to live from their passion, their driving, to battle between themselves. I have a lot of good friends there that I fought against in different categories.

“It’s just great to see that they have this opportunity. And it’s also good racing, as they say, so happy that it exists.”
