Double delight in Portland as Da Costa continues race-winning run

Antonio Felix da Costa continued his impressive race-winning streak in Round 14 of the 2024 Formula E season at the second race of the Portland E-Prix.

Antonio Felix da Costa is in the form of his life, the Porsche driver taking victory in the second race of the 2024 Portland E-Prix, to complete a double at the Formula E weekend at the Portland International Raceway.

Starting second on the grid, Da Costa drove a perfectly managed race, managing to hold off a last-lap challenge from Envision’s Robin Frijns to take his third consecutive win of the season.

Frijns had to settle for second place, marking his second podium of the Portland double-header, whilst Mitch Evans rounded out the top three with a third place finish.

Bittersweet Formula E victory in Portland

Despite taking his fourth win in five races, Da Costa struck a pensive note in his post-race interview, the pain lingering from his disqualification from Round 6 of the season in Misano — a race that he had initially won.

“I’m happy, I’m emotional, I’m angry, I’m everything,” said Da Costa. “Those points [in Misano] would have been massive, but it is what it is. We tried to get them back and we failed. I told you yesterday and I’ll say it again, what it could have been.

“I think a lot of people in this world live by the motto of never giving up but I think we’re going to a complete new degree of that motto, if I’m honest. It’s insane.”

Cassidy’s championship campaign takes a beating

Portland might have seen back-to-back wins for Da Costa, but on the other end of the spectrum, the race weekend brought back-to-back misery for Formule E championship leader Nick Cassidy.

Though Cassidy still clings onto his championship lead, the Jaguar driver leaves Portland empty-handed having finished outside of the points in both races.

Despite qualifying in a better position for Race 2 of the Formule E Portland double-header, Cassidy got caught up in the Lap 14 melee which saw him forced into the pits, bringing him swiftly out of race-winning contention.

Adding insult to injury, Cassidy’s championship rival Pascal Wehrlein managed to finish within the points in both races, the Porsche driver taking P4 in Race 2.

With Evans‘ podium finish and Wehrlein’s double spell of points, the gap to Cassidy has closed. The Kiwi now leads by a margin of just 12 points. Evans and Wehrlein sit on equal points behind Cassidy, with 155 points to Cassidy’s 167.

Robin Frijns resurgent

Firmly bringing to an end a seven-race streak without any points, the Portland E-Prix saw Robin Frijns take consecutive P2 finishes, elevating him to ninth in the championship standings.

Since finishing second in Round 3 of the season, Frijns had endured a tough string of results, his highest position a P9 in Japan and Shanghai. But Portland seemed to spark something in Frijns, the Dutchman putting Da Costa through his paces as he challenged for the win during Race 2, taking fastest lap in the process.

Frijns’ success in Portland will come as something of a relief for Envision Racing, the team having struggled for points so far this season. It’s a stark contrast from the Silverstone-based team’s success last season, having won the Season 9 Teams’ championship with Nick Cassidy and Sebastien Buemi.

The Formula E season finale awaits

With the Portland E-Prix wrapped up for another year, Formula E heads next to the city of London for the final races of Season 10.

Now with Nick Cassidy’s championship lead only marginal, there’s still all to play for. Will the title fight come down to the last race of the season?

Formula E returns for a double-header in London on the 20 and 21 July.
