Lucas di Grassi has confirmed he has returned to Abt Cupra alongside Nico Muller to bring the Formula E driver market to a close ahead of the 2024 season.

Di Grassi, who is the most experienced driver in Formula E, left Mahindra in September after his and the team’s visions diverged during the summer.

The Brazilian won the Season 3 title with Abt and was a regular title contender during the early Formula E years with the team.

“It just feels great to be back with Abt,” said Di Grassi. “Not only did I win two titles with this team, but I also have endless memories with all the people who work there with so much passion.

“I couldn’t be more excited to return after two years and I’m really looking forward to working together. Together, we will give our all to get back, step by step, the results that the whole team deserves.”

Di Grassi replaces Robin Frijns, who has returned to Envision, and wants to continue racing in Formula E into his 40s.

The 39-year-old will end his racing career in Formula E and team principal Thomas Biermaier is delighted to have Di Grassi back.

“We know about the great challenge of battling against international competition as a small customer team,” said Biermaier. “That’s why experience, technical know-how and full passion for the joint project count all the more for us – with Lucas, we have the perfect man on board for the future.”

CEO of the Abt Group Hans-Jurgen Abt added: “We are happy that we have brought Lucas back to Abt – he was and is a good friend of our whole team and is one of Formula E’s greats of the past ten years.

“Ten years ago, Abt was the first German team to join the championship and returned as a private team in 2023 after a one-year break. “

When is the 2024 Formula E season?

The new Formula E season begins with pre-season testing from Valencia at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo from October 23-27, with Mexico City hosting the 2024 opener on January 13.
