Da Costa wins brilliantly in Berlin: Hopefully I can keep this one!

Antonio Felix da Costa won his first race since Cape Town 2023 as he controlled the final stages of the second 2024 Berlin E-Prix

Antonio Felix da Costa drove a superb race to win the second 2024 Berlin E-Prix as he won on Porsche‘s home soil by beating Jaguar‘s Nick Cassidy.

Another peloton-style race unfolded on Sunday, but with slightly less chaos due to the less laps, and Da Costa emerged on top with a relatively controlled performance in the final 15 laps.

Having controversially lost a win in Misano due to a technical infringement, Da Costa is not under investigation post-race in Berlin, so should keep his first victory of 2024.

He hit the front with 10 laps to go of the original race length, following a safety car for a collision between Norman Nato and Sascha Fenestraz, and held the lead apart from when Mitch Evans briefly took first place before taking his last attack mode.

“It’s an emotional one,” said Da Costa. “Hopefully we can keep this one! It feels great to win at Porsche‘s home race. We have got so many guests and people that work in the factory that don’t normally come to the races.

“A tough start to the season. We have been building good momentum, always closing the gap to the championship leaders, it feels good to win this one.

“You have to work hard when things are not right and when you have the right people around you, it makes things easier. I want to dedicate this win to my engineer’s father-in-law and his family. This is for him.”

Cassidy battles to second

Cassidy led the majority of the first half of the race and was well positioned on energy until he decided to try and help teammate Mitch Evans.

Evans saved his last attack mode for late on, so Cassidy let him through but dropped to fourth place amid the peloton-style racing, as Oliver Rowland got in between the Jaguars.

Once Evans took his final attack mode with four laps remaining, Cassidy let Evans go again, but the pair wasn’t able to take advantage of his extra power, so the Jaguars swapped positions.

Cassidy overtook Rowland with two laps to go but couldn’t catch Da Costa, so finished six tenths of a second behind but extended his lead in the drivers’ championship to 16 points over Pascal Wehrlein, who finished fourth.

“Ultimately it’s a great weekend for us,” said Cassidy. “I feel sorry for Mitch. We both could have had a better race.

“We tried to work together but it’s hard with this peloton racing. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.”

Dennis unable to convert pole position

Jake Dennis surprisingly started from pole position as Andretti found some performance over one lap, having struggled in qualifying throughout the season.

But, Dennis became embroiled in a race-long fight with title rival Wehrlein throughout the race as they jostled for position in the top five. The pair made contact several times but managed to continue, with Dennis finishing in fifth, ahead of Evans and Jehan Daruvala in seventh, which is the Maserati‘s best Formula E result.

“It was difficult for all of us,” said Dennis. “A challenging race. It slipped away from us when I got told to take attack again. The team thought I missed it but I had taken it, so we dropped to eighth or ninth.

“A lot of crashes, so I’m just happy to get some points. It felt like everyone was against me. It is what it is.”

Elsewhere, Taylor Bernard starred again for McLaren in eighth place, Joel Eriksson was ninth and Jean-Eric Vergne finished in 10th.

Maximilian Gunther crashed out early in the second Berlin E-Prix, with Stoffel Vandoorne suffering damage which hurt his chances of fighting for points.
