Cassidy dominates rain-soaked Shanghai E-Prix for first win of Formula E season

Jaguar’s Nick Cassidy cruises to lights-to-flag victory as Porsche secure double podium

Nick Cassidy delivered a clinical performance in treacherous conditions to take a long-awaited first win of the 2025 Formula E season, claiming a commanding lights-to-flag victory for Jaguar at the 2025 Shanghai E-Prix.

The New Zealander started from pole after a curtailed qualifying session limited to group stages due to heavy rain. Cassidy wasted no time asserting control, leading from the start and never looking back in what became the first lights-to-flag win under Formula E’s new GEN3 Evo regulations.

Despite intermittent showers and pools of standing water around the Shanghai International Circuit, Cassidy’s pace was unmatched as he calmly negotiated the elements to return to the top step of the podium.

“This weekend is a massive highlight,” said Cassidy. “Really proud of all our guys. Qualifying form yesterday was huge for us… and now to get that monkey off the back is awesome.”

Porsche rebound with double podium finish

Behind the dominant Jaguar, Porsche rebounded impressively after failing to score in Saturday’s race. Pascal Wehrlein and Antonio Felix da Costa secured second and third respectively, marking a crucial swing in the title fight.

Wehrlein gained the upper hand over his teammate following the opening Attack Mode activations, maintaining composure after a slight misstep early on.

“Very tricky conditions especially in the beginning,” Wehrlein noted. “Our pace was good. Not good enough for P1, but quite far ahead of the guys behind.”

Da Costa, though on the podium, acknowledged his struggles: “I felt like my balance wasn’t quite there and I really struggled with my rears… I was slow to be honest, but good enough for a podium.”

The result propelled Porsche to the top of the Teams’ World Championship standings, overtaking Nissan after their non-score in Shanghai. While Porsche also trails Nissan in the Manufacturers’ Standings, the momentum shift was significant.

Points shakeup as drivers brave brutal conditions

Further back, Jake Hughes delivered a strong drive to take fourth for Maserati MSG Racing, followed by Jean-Eric Vergne of DS Penske and Andretti’s Nico Mueller.

Despite spinning two laps before the finish, Stoffel Vandoorne recovered to finish seventh, while Robin Frijns, Lucas di Grassi, and Taylor Barnard rounded out the top ten.

The rain-soaked race tested the field, with several notable drivers – Jake Dennis, Nyck de Vries, Dan Ticktum, and Sam Bird – all caught out by the slippery surface. However, 21 of the 22 cars made it to the finish, underscoring the quality of driving on display.

The championship standings also tightened as Oliver Rowland’s lead shrinks to 68 points over Wehrlein (103), with Da Costa moving into third on 88 points. With five races left, the fight for both the Drivers’ and Teams’ titles remains wide open.

Formula E now heads to Jakarta for Round 12 on June 21, where all eyes will be on whether Cassidy can repeat his Shanghai form and whether Porsche can build on their momentum.
