Mitch Evans ends Monaco curse with stunning victory in Jaguar 1-2

Mitch Evans won his first Formula E race of 2024 with a brilliant victory at the Monaco E-Prix

Mitch Evans won the 2024 Monaco E-Prix as Jaguar pulled off a strategical masterstroke to take a 1-2, with Nick Cassidy finishing second and Stoffel Vandoorne returned to the podium for DS Penske.

Evans and Cassidy started on the second row of the grid but played a clear team game by swapping positions and helping one another throughout the race to achieve the perfect result.

Whilst it was relatively straight forward at the front, there were several incidents further behind with two safety cars needed after crashes for Mahindra‘s Edoardo Mortara and Abt Cupra‘s Nico Muller.

Pascal Wehrlein retains the lead of the Formula E drivers’ championship, from Cassidy, with his fifth place behind Jean-Eric Vergne in fourth.

Nissan‘s Oliver Rowland was sixth, ahead of Porsche‘s Antonio Felix da Costa, who had lost a lot of time earlier in the race when he got stuck behind Sebastien Buemi at the hairpin in a chaotic multi-car incident.

How Jaguar executed perfect Monaco race

Prior to the race, Wehrlein was favourite as he took pole position from Vandoorne and Porsche have been very strong in terms of efficiency this season.

But, a safety car on lap five proved costly for Wehrlein as he took his attack mode and dropped to fifth. This gave Vandoorne the lead from Evans, Cassidy and Vergne.

When Vandoorne took his second attack mode, he came out behind Cassidy, who held the field up to allow Evans to build a lead. This allowed Evans to take his attack mode and keep first place.

At one point, Evans let Cassidy through to return the favour, so both Jaguars had taken their attack mode and were in first and second mainly thanks to Cassidy‘s holding up of the field.

Even with another late safety car, the Jaguar pair had more energy than their rivals and comfortably secured a 1-2, with Evans making it four Monaco Formula E podiums in a row, but his first on the top step.

DS Penske didn’t quite have the pace to seriously challenge Jaguar but Season 9 champion Vandoorne ensured his first podium since August 2022.

At the other end of the field, defending champion Jake Dennis was last of the finishers after he had an incident in the tunnel and lost his front wing.

Britain’s Taylor Bernard was 14th for McLaren on his Formula E debut, having replaced Sam Bird following first practice as the latter injured his hand.
