Mitch Evans brands Max Gunther driving ‘dirty’ and ‘ridiculous’

Mitch Evans finished in sixth after a chaotic first Misano E-Prix, where he spent key parts of the race battling Maximilian Gunther

Mitch Evans has hit out at Maximilian Gunther‘s driving in the first 2024 Misano E-Prix after the pair battled hard for the final podium spot that ended up going to Jake Dennis.

The Formula E peloton-style racing in Misano led to cars going up to six-wide in some corners before the final 10 laps saw the pace pick up, with Gunther defending from Evans for fourth place, which would be a net third due to Jean-Eric Vergne‘s five-second time penalty for an incident with Nick Cassidy,

Dennis slipped by both Evans and Gunther, who finished fourth in Saturday’s race. Dan Ticktum overtook Evans towards the end, bumping the Jaguar driver to sixth.

“Third place was on, but racing guys like Gunther is just ridiculous,” Evans exclusively told Total-Motorsport.com. “Some guys just don’t see the bigger pictures sometimes. An amazing race, not a great look but I feel like I did all the right steps at the right time.

“I didn’t have as much energy as Oliver [Rowland] and Antonio [Felix da Costa], so there was compromise with that but a podium was possible if it wasn’t for Gunther. It was just dirty driving. A shame.”

It’s not the first time Evans has been on the wrong end of some aggressive defending this season, after Jean-Eric Vergne fended the New Zealander off in a feisty battle in Diriyah.

Vergne wasn’t penalised and neither was Gunther in Misano, which Evans appeared to be bemused by.

“There’s a lot of weird stuff that happens out there,” said Evans. “Obviously the stewards can’t follow everything. Just disappointing.”

Evans hoping to be strong again on Sunday

On a more positive note, Evans had qualified on pole position for the first time in 2024 but it didn’t matter much due to the amount of energy saving and no drivers wanting to lead the race.

Evans says the car was hooked up throughout qualifying which allowed him to put together strong laps during the duels.

“Over one lap, everything was working well,” Evans added. “In the race it was strong, but not as strong as qualifying. People will make some jumps overnight and there are no guarantees with qualifying.

“At least with less laps on Sunday, it will be more important. Hopefully we can be strong again.”
