Wehrlein Secures Dramatic Misano E-Prix Win After Rowland Runs Out of Energy

When leading the race Oliver Rowland's Nissan ran out of energy which allowed Pascal Wehrlein's Porsche to take the win in Misano

In a stunning turn of events at the 2024 Misano E-Prix, Pascal Wehrlein seized a dramatic victory, capitalising on Oliver Rowland‘s last-lap energy depletion to clinch his sixth Formula E win. The race, filled with strategic manoeuvres and critical energy management, culminated in a thrilling showdown that reshaped the championship leaderboard.

From the outset, the Misano World Circuit proved a testing ground for energy conservation, with drivers wrestling over track position and the timing of their Attack Mode activations. Polesitter Jake Hughes initially led the pack, but the lead frequently changed hands as Jean-Eric Vergne, Nico Mueller, and eventually Oliver Rowland each took their turn at the front.

Rowland, driving for Nissan, made a bold move for the lead on Lap 20, attempting to secure a victory from what appeared to be a disadvantageous position in terms of remaining energy.

However, Wehrlein, who had been conservatively managing his energy reserves behind the leaders, found himself in an optimal position as the race neared its conclusion. Despite a scare with his powertrain derating – a situation where the car’s power output is temporarily reduced to prevent overheating – Wehrlein kept close to Rowland.

This patience paid off dramatically when Rowland, having misjudged his energy consumption, slowed dramatically on the final lap, allowing Wehrlein to pass and take the victory for Porsche.

Consistent Dennis

Jake Dennis showcased remarkable skill, moving up from ninth to claim the second spot on the podium for Andretti. His performance was characterised by a series of overtakes and strategic plays that demonstrated his prowess and understanding of the circuit’s demands.

Nick Cassidy also highlighted his racing acumen by executing a last-moment overtake on ABT Cupra‘s Nico Muller at the final corner, securing third place and adding to the race’s dramatic finish.

Muller, who had led for significant portions of the race, was heartbreakingly close to his first podium of the season but ended up fourth, marking yet another strong showing for ABT Cupra.

Behind him, consistent performances from Sacha Fenestraz and Sergio Sette Camara underscored the depth of talent in the field, with Fenestraz finishing fifth and Camara sixth.

This victory was pivotal for Wehrlein, placing him level with Jake Dennis at the top of the Driver Standings with 89 points each, and pushing prior leader Rowland down to third. The teams’ standings also saw movement, with Jaguar extending their lead over Andretti, setting the stage for a fiercely competitive continuation of the season.

As Formula E moves to the iconic streets of Monte Carlo for Round 8, the drivers will no doubt be reflecting on the lessons of Misano, where strategy, precision, and a cool head under pressure proved essential for reaching the podium.
