Dennis: Formula E brings something different, F1 is just a procession

World champion Jake Dennis has given his views on Formula E's racing compared to Formula 1

Jake Dennis believes Formula E‘s peloton style of racing brings something different to motorsport in an era where Formula 1 is relatively dull.

At the two Misano E-Prix, Formula E had its latest pack racing where nobody wanted to lead the early parts of the race in order to save energy.

Dennis has been one of the more positive drivers about the racing, which was branded “ridiculous” and “crazy” by McLaren‘s Sam Bird, with other drivers criticising it.

“From my side, I felt like it was a bit better on Sunday,” Dennis told select members of the press, including Total-Motorsport.com. “The first five laps were very similar, which was expected, and then the pace picked up pretty quick and it was a bit more clean.

“The overtakes were a bit more genuine. I felt like it was a step in the right direction. But I generally, as long as it’s not too bad, I quite enjoy these races.

“In comparison, to say Tokyo whereas at the opposite end of the spectrum, where it can be a bit dull for the fans, and as soon as the second attack is done you know where you’re finishing whereas this has a bit more excitement.

“From my side, the way F1 is at the moment, it’s important to bring something different instead of just a procession and everyone driving around in a train because these cars are way harder to overtake in, when we have a lot of energy. Way harder than anything else compared to F1, F2, as we don’t have DRS.

“We need this excitement. It’s just a balance. I think Monaco last year was a great example, it was a really good race and had the perfect balance of energy then Portland was a bit extreme.”

Dennis outlines Misano track changes

One of the tighter points of the wide Misano race track is the chicane on the back straight, where there were several incidents in the two races including, Nick Cassidy and Jean-Eric Vergne colliding on Saturday.

Dennis took back-to-back podiums in Misano to move level with Pascal Wehrlein at the top of the drivers’ championship.

Misano doesn’t have a contract for the 2025 Formula E calendar, with the series opting to analyse its options in Italy after leaving Rome off the schedule for the first time this season.

Dennis, who finished second in both races at the weekend, thinks some minor track changes should be made to Misano if Formula E return in 2025.

“The biggest issue was the chicane,” Dennis explained. “The way it pinches so much doesn’t allow too much to go two wide through there. It’s really stop-start.

“I think Portland’s version is a better compromise but the straights are longer and wider, so then you get eight-wide. Whereas here, if you have two or three wide into a Portland style chicane, it would be quite nice.

“But when you have two or three wide into a single file chicane, which is 50kph, it’s incredibly difficult for us to judge the concertina effect.

“If we come back here next year, it just needs to be a tuning through Turns 8 and 9. Sector 1 in general worked well and you could really divebomb someone into Turn 2. I think the track is better than I thought it would be, just the chicane needs to be refined for next year.”
