Antonio Felix da Costa stripped of Misano E-Prix victory

Antonio Felix Da Costa has been stripped of his win at the 2024 Misano E-Prix due to a technical infringement

Antonio Felix Da Costa of Porsche has been disqualified from the inaugural Misano E-Prix, resulting in his loss of victory for Round 6 of the Formula E World Championship

The disqualification came after a post-race technical inspection identified a breach involving the Porsche 99X Electric GEN3’s throttle damper spring.

Oliver Rowland of Nissan, who originally finished second, has been declared the new race winner, marking his first victory in Formula E since Season 6.

FIA Investigation Reveals Crucial Technicality

According to the FIA technical report, the issue centred around a throttle damper spring that was included in the Gen2 car specifications but erroneously remained on da Costa’s Gen3 car.

The Team Manager and a representative from the manufacturer confirmed that this part had not been altered since the beginning of Season 9. However, they overlooked its removal from the Spark catalogue, a critical list that outlines permissible parts for each model.

“The FIA Technical Delegate confirmed that changes to the Spark catalogue are usually highlighted to ensure visibility of updates, but removals are not,” stated the FIA report.

“The representatives of Spark confirmed that while this part was listed for the Gen2 cars, it was not approved for the current GEN3 cars.”

The FIA concluded that although the non-compliant part did not provide a performance advantage, strict adherence to regulations is mandatory.

The governing body’s ruling, under Article 1.3.3 of the International Sporting Code, emphasised that “the competitor is responsible for the conformity of the car.”

Porsche to Appeal Disqualification

Following the FIA’s decision, the Porsche Formula E Team announced their intention to appeal the disqualification, and have 96 hours to file a formal appeal.

If upheld, this decision could have significant implications not only for Da Costa but also for the team’s standings in the championship.

“Throttle damper spring was an original part from Spark that was used all of last year and been removed from the rulebook without notification to the teams… how many other cars out there are on this spring?” commented Da Costa on Instagram.

Implications for Championship Standings

With Da Costa‘s disqualification, Oliver Rowland ascends to the top of the podium, claiming a long-awaited win for himself and the Nissan. This decision also adjusts the final standings of the race, promoting Max Gunther to the third podium position.
