Williams Racing Team history

Williams Grand Prix Engineering was founded in 1977 by Sir Frank Williams and Sir Patrick Head. Within three years, the team became a race winner, and in 1980 it claimed its first Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships with Alan Jones.

The 1980s and 1990s marked the team’s golden era. With drivers like Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill, and Jacques Villeneuve, Williams captured nine Constructors’ and seven Drivers’ Championships. The team was known for its engineering excellence, pioneering active suspension and aerodynamic innovations.

By the early 2000s, Williams remained competitive, partnering with BMW and winning races with Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher. However, after BMW departed in 2005, performance dipped, and the team entered a long rebuilding phase.

A breakthrough came in 2012 when Pastor Maldonado won the Spanish Grand Prix, but sustained competitiveness proved elusive. Financial struggles in the late 2010s led to the sale of the team to Dorilton Capital in 2020, with the Williams family stepping away from management.

Under new leadership, Williams has invested heavily in facilities, personnel, and long-term planning. The signing of Carlos Sainz Jr. for 2025 signals an intent to accelerate its return to consistent points finishes.
