Fernando Alonso details conversations with rival teams before extending Aston Martin F1 contract

Fernando Alonso was linked with Red Bull and Mercedes but will stay at Aston Martin for at least two more F1 seasons

-

Fernando Alonso revealed he never had serious conversations with other Formula 1 teams before signing his Aston Martin contract extension until at least the end of 2026, despite rumours linking the Spaniard with Red Bull and Mercedes.

Alonso added he did his due diligence before signing but that Aston Martin was always his first priority, as he was linked with filling Lewis Hamilton‘s vacant Mercedes seat or replacing Sergio Perez and partnering Max Verstappen at the all-conquering Red Bull for 2025.

The Spaniard used the first three races of the season to decide whether he wanted to commit to continuing in F1, finalising that process by the 2024 Australian Grand Prix and then quickly reaching a deal with Aston Martin.

“I did speak with other people as well yes, I think it’s normal when you enter negotiations you need to balance what’s the market, listen to everyone else as well, it’s just a normal procedure,” Alonso told media outlets including Total-Motorsport.com.

“It’s fair to listen to all the proposals, see how the market moves. But in my head, Aston was the logical team for me and at the end it was the best, I felt the most wanted in Aston Martin.”

“All the other conversations were just light and never aiming to any conclusions and maybe more time was needed while in Aston it was a clear desire to work together, that’s why it came very easy.”

However, Alonso refused to reveal which other teams he had consulted before committing to Aston Martin, with a deal that runs at least until the end of the 2026 season.

That means he’ll see in the first year of F1‘s new era of regulations when Aston Martin will switch from Mercedes to Honda power – the manufacturer that’s effectively fired Red Bull to five championships in the decade so far.

“I won’t be specific on which teams I spoke because I think it’s not important now,” Alonso added. “This is a day for Aston Martin. It’s normal conversations that you have, it’s the same for teams when they’re searching for a driver, they touch everyone just to know their position and their contract situation.

“Even if they’re not super interested they always want to know everything and for me it was the same but without any clear targets and first priority was Aston.”
