Felipe Drugovich coy on F1 seat for 2024

Felipe Drugovich believes he still has a chance to be on the Formula 1 grid next year

    -

Felipe Drugovich says he is waiting for the right opportunity to come before choosing his career path for 2024 as he spends a year on the sidelines.

Drugovich is Aston Martin‘s Formula 1 reserve driver and replaced Lance Stroll in pre-season testing when the Canadian had a cycling accident.

Stroll recovered in time for the opening Bahrain Grand Prix, so Drugovich, who was fastest in the Formula E rookie test in Berlin, has not raced competitively.

“I think last year, I was really hoping to win the championship and maybe get a seat in F1,” Drugovich exclusively told Total-Motorsport.com. “I didn’t manage it but got a reserve seat.

“I’m still looking for it and am still working with Aston Martin, I’m very thankful as well for opportunities like with Maserati [in Formula E].

“We looked into other opportunities. There were few reserve roles available but I think Aston was the only one that really gave me an opportunity with testing and good opportunities, so I’m really enjoying that.

“I’m just waiting for the opportunity to come and then we’ll see what we have in the table to choose what the right thing is.”

Not taking inspiration from De Vries

Drugovich‘s presence in the Formula E rookie test, suggests the all-electric racing series could be an option for him in 2024.

Nyck de Vries joined F1 from Formula E at the end of 2022 but it’s not something the current Formula 2 champion is currently looking to replicate.

“You never know what’s gonna happen in joining F1,” said Drugovich. “De Vries is 28 and I’m still 22 So I still have time.

“I think that thing of joining F1 or other categories really early, like it was some years ago, is in the past now and I think F1 teams are trying to choose experienced drivers.

“And outside of F1 there are great categories like Formula E, so we just need to wait and see what happens.”
