“F*ck that guy” – Seething Daniel Ricciardo slams Lance Stroll for Chinese GP crash

Stroll rear-ended the Australian RB driver as they all reacted to Fernando Alonso’s lock-up at the 2024 Chinese GP

Daniel Ricciardo laid into Lance Stroll for the Canadian’s role in their 2024 Chinese Grand Prix crash that saw the Australian retire, declaring, “f*ck that guy,” after hearing Stroll‘s opinion on the incident.

It was a rather strange crash that occurred at the first safety car restart that was issued after Valtteri Bottas retired on Lap 19 due to a power unit problem. As the safety car headed back to the pits, Max Verstappen was in control of the pace of the pack.

As he looked for the opportune moment to kick off the restart, the drivers behind experienced a concertina effect that saw Stroll‘s Aston Martin run into the back of Ricciardo’s RB when Fernando Alonso locked up, which appeared to catch him off guard.

As a result, the 25-year-old slammed into the back of Ricciardo in front of him since he wasn’t paying attention to the car in front and later earned a 10-second penalty for the collision, although he blamed the Aussie for what happened leaving the 34-year-old fuming.

“I’d slowly started to calm down, and then I was told what Lance thinks of the incident,” Ricciardo told the press in China. “Apparently, I’m an idiot, and it was my fault.

“That made my blood boil, because it’s clear as day and it’s also behind a safety car. The only thing you’ve got to do is watch the car in front. We can’t predict what the leader’s going to do. The race doesn’t start until the control line.

“I’m doing my best not to say what I want to say, but f*ck that guy. And I’m being nice, too! But if that’s what he thinks.”

The crash left Ricciardo with diffuser damage that, at the end of the second safety car, saw him drop down the order before he was forced into retirement.

It was a bitter disappointment for him and the team after they gave him a new chassis that appeared to allow him to find some good form as he was running in the points.

Was Stroll wholly to blame?

For his transgression, Stroll earned that hefty 10 second time penalty, but it didn’t stop there as he also received two penalty points on his racing license, resulting in four for the 12-month period. A total of 12 penalty points accrued over a year result in a race ban for the driver.

But was he to blame? Stroll undoubtedly could have and should have avoided the accident by being more aware. However, it was quite unfortunate in that the lock-up that caused Ricciardo to slow was barely visible from his cockpit, so he likely had no idea it happened.

This is what the stewards accepted as they declared Stroll “predominately” to blame, which is the same as “mostly,” as they acknowledged the mitigating circumstances leading up to the accident.

“The car in front of Car 18 slowed down to take the corner and also to try to match the pace of the group of cars in front of it,” an FIA Decision Document said. “Car 18 [Stroll] then collided with Car 3 [Ricciardo].

“We determined that Car 18 ought to have anticipated the pace of the cars in front, particularly Car 3 and should have prepared to brake accordingly. Had it done that, it would have avoided the collision.

“Hence Car 18 was predominately to blame for the collision that ultimately led to Car 3 having to retire from to the race.”
