Look away Checo – Horner praises Perez’s F1 rival as star fights for Red Bull future after ‘brutal’ Monaco GP

Red Bull hold an advantage of just 24 points over Ferrari in the 2024 F1 constructors' championship after the Monaco GP

Christian Horner insists Red Bull will make a decision about Sergio Perez‘s Red Bull future “in the fullness of time” but extolled Aston Martin‘s Lance Stroll for lighting up an otherwise processional 2024 Monaco Grand Prix.

Supposed street circuit specialist Perez had an absolute nightmare weekend on the track he took a memorable but controversial victory at two years ago, as he was knocked out of Q1 and only lasted two corners in the grand prix, with his contract expiring at the end of 2024.

After also missing Q3 last time out at Imola, it’s a worrying trend for Perez while Stroll also finished pointless but was put onto soft tyres by Aston Martin for a sprint to the finish and made several overtakes on the iconic yet dull streets of Monte Carlo.

“Thank god for Lance Stroll, the only guy that managed to overtake in the race I think,” Horner told select members of the press including Total-Motorsport.com.

Monaco‘s such a great place to come racing but the cars are so big now that we just need to look at, can we do something that introduces an overtaking area or at least the potential of an overtake because the top 10 is exactly as it started on the grid, not a single overtake in the top 10.”

Horner: We must have both drivers at the front

Perez somehow missed Q3 in five consecutive races in the all-conquering RB19 – a streak that started when he crashed out of qualifying in Monaco 12 months ago – and he once again watched his wrecked Red Bull get hoisted up by a crane in 2024.

This time it was on the Sunday though, after a first-lap incident with Kevin Magnussen where Perez kept to the racing line and squeezed the Dane just too much, expecting (somewhat optimistically) that his resolute opponent would bail out.

With Max Verstappen only finishing fifth, behind both Ferrari and McLaren drivers, the Dutchman’s drivers’ championship advantage has been cut to 31 points ahead of Charles Leclerc, while Red Bull now lead Ferrari by just 24 in the constructors’ standings.

“This weekend’s been pretty brutal for him” Horner added. “Obviously we need to make sure that we’ve got both cars up there scoring points because we cannot dismiss the threat of Ferrari and McLaren in both championships.

Checo‘s first six races were very strong, he was qualifying on the front row and finishing second and third and scoring a lot, he just needs to get back into that position of confidence and not to see a dip.”
