Zak Brown reacts to Lando Norris Miami GP win as McLaren boss has celebration in mind

The McLaren boss is pondering whether to add to his body art after Norris' extraordinary triumph in Miami

McLaren CEO Zak Brown has hinted he could decide to get another tattoo after Lando Norris stormed home to claim his maiden Formula 1 victory at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix.

The Briton ended his five-year, 110-race wait for his first race win since making his debut with McLaren in 2019 after beating Max Verstappen to the checkered flag in a thrilling race.

Brown was forced to stand by his word and get his first tattoo after agreeing to a bet with Daniel Ricciardo, who clinched their previous victory at the 2021 Italian GP. And after Norris’ outstanding drive, the McLaren supremo refused to rule out getting inked again.

Asked whether he would be getting a tattoo to celebrate, Brown said: “Yeah, I don’t mind Miami. It’s kind of my home country, so why not?”

Norris had finished on the podium 15 times before finally celebrating a memorable day in Miami. His victory came about with some fortune from the safety car, but there was nothing lucky about how Norris put a seven-second gap between himself and Verstappen towards the second phase of the race.

Still, that didn’t stop the American from fearing the worst, especially after they had benefitted from an earlier safety car which could have damaged their chances of wining so late in the race.

“[My nerves were] not so good, they’re still not good!” Brown told Sky Sports F1 after the race. “But what a drive. The car was great. I’ve got to thank everyone back at McLaren, and here. All the hard work is paying off.”

An emotional tribute

While Norris dedicated the win to his grandmother on the team radio, his boss, McLaren team principal Andrea Stella, saved a special mention for their late former sporting director Gil de Ferran, who died in December 2023 at the age of 56.

De Ferran was a popular member inside the team, despite never racing in F1 setup, and formed a part of their management team in two separate spells before his death.

Stella paid a special tribute to his team and singled out his departed colleague De Ferran, who coincidentally lived near to the Miami circuit in the Florida city of Fort Lauderdale.

“Most important is the victory for Lando because he deserves it so much. We have always said, as soon as we give him the right material, he will make it and he made it,” Stella said.

“I know what kind of work is behind this… it’s so deserved for the McLaren team. I hope everyone enjoys this moment. This victory is for Gil de Ferran.”
