Zak Brown hopeful of ‘small miracle’ in McLaren’s hunt of Aston Martin and Ferrari

Aston Martin are only six points clear of McLaren in the fight for fourth

Zak Brown has assessed McLaren’s chances of reeling in Aston Martin and Ferrari in the constructors’ championship before the end of the 2023 Formula 1 season.

McLaren have had a campaign of real extremes this year.

They started proceedings in 2023 looking like rank outsiders to even finish inside the top 10 at races, with both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri surely fearing the worst over a long and arduous season ahead.

However, wind forward a handful of months and the papaya-clad team are arguably in possession of the third-fastest car on the grid, and potentially even the second depending on which race weekend it is.

Indeed, last time out in Qatar, Piastri earned a Sprint win whilst both he and teammate Lando Norris finished on the podium in the Grand Prix – and that was by no means the first double podium finish they have enjoyed this year.

A fine turnaround, then, and many will have them down as favourites in the race for fourth place in the constructors’ championship, with Aston Martin losing momentum in recent weeks, especially with Lance Stroll’s struggles in mind.

Indeed, Aston Martin are only six points clear of McLaren in the fight for fourth, whilst Ferrari are certainly still in reach for the Woking-based team, as the Maranello outfit lie 83 points further up in the standings.

Zak Brown on McLaren chances against Aston Martin and Ferrari

McLaren are flying right now, then, and ahead of the 2023 United States Grand Prix, Brown was asked about the chances he felt his squad had of making fourth place theirs come the final chequered flag in Abu Dhabi in November, and even potentially making it into third.

“[I] hope so [that we can get fourth], I hope [we can get third] even more,” Brown told the press.

“That’ll take a small miracle but statistically it’s still possible. You never know but all we can do is get as many points every weekend and see where we end up.”

Certainly, you’d probably make McLaren actually favourites for fourth over Aston Martin at the moment, and Brown has given some insight into how the team is planning on trying to succeed in this particular battle.

“We’ve just got to keep doing what we’ve been doing since the summer break,” Brown stated.

“The car has been good. I think this will be a difficult weekend, the track is bumpy and we’ve got to raise the car a little here so we might not be quite as competitive as we have been in the last few races, but I think we’ll be competitive and all we can do is keep pushing and giving the drivers the best we can, and see where we end up.”
