Wolff: Nothing negative to say about anticipated Mercedes upgrades

Lewis Hamilton was among the front-runners on Friday, although George Russell was outside the top 10.

Mercedes are yet to find any negatives to their radical new upgrades after two hours of free practice at the Monaco Grand Prix, Toto Wolff has revealed.

The Silver Arrows brought a raft of changes to their W14 car to the streets of the principality which notably sees them ditch their super-thin side pods for a Red Bull-esque design.

Lewis Hamilton enjoyed the new upgrades, finishing the day sixth, but even though George Russell was 12th overall, Wolff has claimed that there have been no complaints from his drivers yet.

“It’s a solid base to start from,” Wolff told members of the media including Total-Motorsport.com on Friday at the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix.

“I think we need to go away and look at our laps to really understand how our car functions, at least we haven’t found anything negative.”

Verstappen the standout

Despite being asked whether Mercedes were in the fight for pole position, Wolff didn’t make any bold predictions after FP2 which saw Max Verstappen end the day fastest of anyone.

The Mercedes team principal also believes that the world champion was the man to beat in race trim, which is an ominous thought for those trying to hunt him down.

“We’ve driven two different setups to allow us to gather more data,” Wolff added. “It’s going to be super tight among the front runners.

“The only one who stood out was Max (Verstappen) on the long run”
