Verstappen and Norris hit out at Qatar GP conditions: Limit found

The hot, humid conditions at the 2023 Qatar GP caused many drivers issues

-

Max Verstappen and Lando Norris are demanding answers after several drivers became ill following the conclusion of a physically challenging 2023 Qatar Grand Prix.

The second Qatar GP held at the revamped Losail International Circuit occurred in humid conditions, with drivers struggling to climb out of their cars at the end of the race.

“I think today we probably found the limit,” Norris explained to the press. “It’s sad, we find it this way.

“It’s never a nice situation to be in some people ending up in a medical centre or passing out things like that. It’s a pretty dangerous thing to have going on.

“But it’s not a point where you can just go the drivers need to train more. We’re in a closed car that gets extremely hot in a very physical race. I guess on TV, it probably doesn’t look very physical at all.

“When you have people retiring or in a bad state, it’s too much for the speed we’re doing it’s too dangerous. I’m sure we’ll speak about it because it shouldn’t have happened in the first place.”

Verstappen compares Qatar conditions to a sauna

With conditions hitting 40 degrees during the weekend, Qatar has quickly established itself as one of the toughest races on the F1 calendar.

None of this stopped Verstappen, who took his 14th win of the 2023 F1 season on a weekend which saw him secure his third consecutive world championship.

“Yeah, when I saw the weather before coming here, I was not looking forward to it,” admitted Verstappen. “It’s just too warm, and like Lando said, it has nothing to do with more training.

“I think some of the guys who are struggling today are extremely fit for even fitter than me. It’s like you walk around in a sauna, and then at night, the humidity goes up.

“The races are quite long. But a few places [are] like that. Singapore is almost like a two-hour race, and it’s very warm. It’s also quite on the limit of what is what should be allowed.

“So there are a few things to look at, but this was definitely way too hot.”
