F1 world hits out at Verstappen: Nobody is going to want to work with him

Pedro de la Rosa believes Max Verstappen's decision not to follow team orders could have long-lasting ramifications unless Red Bull quickly step in

Former F1 driver Pedro de la Rosa believes Red Bull must make Max Verstappen understand why his decision to refuse team orders was wrong or they may have trouble filling their second seat in the future.

The Dutchman passed teammate Sergio Perez following a late Safety Car period at the Brazilian GP as the duo looked to chase down Fernando Alonso. With the two unable to catch the Alpine, Verstappen was asked to let Perez through at the final corner in order to aid the Mexican’s push for second in the championship.

Instead, Verstappen approached the line without backing off, with race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase asking him what happened.

“I told you already last time guys, don’t ask that again to me, okay,” said Verstappen. “Are we clear about that? I gave my reasons and I stand by it.”

Perez stated that Verstappen had shown who he truly was, and while team principal Christian Horner later insisted that Red Bull are focused on securing second for the Mexican in Abu Dhabi, there’s been no shortage of criticism directed at the Dutchman over the matter.

“Nobody is going to want to work with Verstappen”

Pedro de la Rosa, who made 107 Grand Prix starts with Arrows, Jaguar, McLaren, Sauber and HRT says Red Bull must address the matter with Verstappen.

The Spaniard told DAZN Spain that the Milton Keynes outfit have to make it clear to the Dutchman that he was in the wrong, because future teammates may not be willing to help him out if they know they are going to be treated poorly.

“I think it’s the team’s job to make him understand why it’s wrong, and he has to understand because it’s very important if he wants to have a loyal squire like he has had in Checo,” explained De la Rosa.

“Nobody is going to want to work for Verstappen if they know that he is going to pay them back like this.”
