Unwanted Yuki Tsunoda eyes Aston Martin switch as Red Bull say no

Tsunoda has only finished out of the points twice in Sunday races throughout 2024’s F1 season.

Yuki Tsunoda revealed he could be tempted to abandon the Red Bull program for Aston Martin ahead of the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, after declaring the team doesn’t want him next to Max Verstappen, although he’s happy to remain at RB for now as there’s no better option available.

The Japanese driver has put in a series of clinical and mature performances throughout the current Formula 1 season that has seen him place 10th in the drivers’ standings with 15 points, as he amasses a 4-1 head-to-head record against Daniel Ricciardo in races the pair have both finished.

In fact, he currently holds 75% of RB’s constructors’ points and has only finished out of the points three times in eight races, if the Chinese and Miami GP sprint race are included alongside Grand Prix races too.

But Red Bull doesn’t seem to be too interested in promoting him to partner Verstappen, as they negotiate an extension with Sergio Perez and have held discussions with Carlos Sainz. That’s left Tsunoda feeling rejected and thinking about new pastures, one being Aston Martin who partner up with Honda from 2026.

“So far [I’m] very happy with RB,” Tsunoda told select members of the media, including Total-Motorsport.com, ahead of the 2024 Monaco GP. “Now we’re fighting sometimes like even P7 or P8, and our options now in the top teams are pretty much taken.

“We’re probably the strongest team in the midfield at least, so we’ll see. I think especially when I’m in RB, you want to always aim for Red Bull but they don’t want me, or they’re not expecting me into the seat.

“If I get an interesting offer that can be better than even RB or Red Bull, yeah, I’ll think about it but I also have a big loyalty to Red Bull as without them I wouldn’t be here [F1] and obviously Honda well.

“Speaking of Honda then maybe Aston Martin, but Aston are taken by two drivers. It’s very open but so far, I’m happy with RB.”

Red Bull back Perez over Tsunoda

After a disappointing 2023 season, it became apparent that Sergio Perez’s seat was under serious pressure from the Red Bull bosses including Helmut Marko and Christian Horner as a multitude of drivers began auditioning for the spot.

That included names such as Tsunoda, Lando Norris, Daniel Ricciardo and Liam Lawson whilst it was claimed that even Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso asked about partnering up with Max Verstappen for the ongoing season and beyond.

But after four podiums in seven Grand Prix races and six “top three finishes” in nine races including sprints, Perez appears to be Red Bull’s preferred option although they’re currently at a disagreement.

The Mexican is thought to want a two-year contract taking him into the first season of the new regulations in 2026, whilst Milton Keynes are only interested in a one-year offer in a similar style of contract that Valtteri Bottas regularly had at Mercedes.

If the pair fail to agree then it opens a door at the current championship leaders and defending champions, although it appears that Red Bull would prefer to bring Carlos Sainz aboard and then Ricciardo, both ahead of Tsunoda, leaving the 24-year-old very disgruntled about his long-term prospects within the Red Bull camp.
