Amid news of Lewis Hamilton’s shock split from physio and assistant Angela Cullen, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has revealed it was the driver who was behind the move.
Cullen and Hamilton were inseparable during their seven years together, even spending lockdown together in the seven-time champion’s motorhome. The pair posted the news on social media, hinting it was a mutual decision with Cullen moving on.
However, Hamilton‘s team principal has indicated that it was in fact the driver’s decision.
“Angela has and will always be a mascot of the team,” Wolff told the press. “She’s the only one who has a louder voice than a starting car.
“But if this is what he decides, we will always absolutely support him. Whatever direction he wants to take.
“Angela was was part of the gang for a long time. And I think in every team, whether that is his close circle, also in the wider group, this is not a static situation that you can freeze because we all developers.
“As people we develop as an organisation and if things don’t work out anymore, then it’s we need to be honest about it. And then bring change.”
The New Zealand native, who is also a former hockey player, has not yet announced what her next endeavour will be.
What did Lewis Hamilton say about Cullen?
Hamilton posted a message on Instagram thanking Cullen for their time together, and the impact she had on his performance.
“For the last seven years, Angela Cullen has been by my side, pushing me to be the best version of myself,” Hamilton wrote. “I am a stronger athlete and a better person because of her.
“So today I hope you’ll join me in wishing her the very best as she takes her next steps to pursue her dreams. Thank you for everything Ang, I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for you.”
