Terrified George Russell screams for red flag to be deployed after crash in Australia

Russell locked the rear of his car and went careering into the barriers at Turns 6-7

George Russell experienced a harrowing crash during Lap 58 of the 2024 Australian Grand Prix, which saw his car make a dramatic collision with the tyre barriers and then catapult across the track.

Initially attributed to driver error, the incident involved a sudden and severe loss of control after Russell had to brake sharply to avoid colliding with Fernando Alonso‘s car ahead.

This manoeuvre led to Russell locking the rear axles, losing the rear end of his Mercedes, and ultimately crashing. The impact was severe enough to flip Russell’s car onto its side after the suspension broke and slipped under the vehicle.

Remarkably, Russell emerged from the wreckage unscathed, managing to exit the car under his own power in what was a frightening moment for the 26-year-old racer.

What Russell said afterwards

Russell described the investigation as “interesting” and declared that Alonso slowed 100m before the usual braking spot but he did stop short of accusing him of a brake test.

He also took responsibility for the incident himself, suggesting he should have been more prepared for a driver to suddenly slow or change their speeds on an active race track.

“My take is I’ve gone off and that’s on me,” Russell said to Sky Sports F1. “I was half a second behind Fernando 100m before the corner then suddenly he came towards me extremely quick and I was right on his gearbox. I don’t know if he had a problem or not.

“It’s clear he braked 100m before the corner and was back on the throttle again and took the corner normally. We’ve already seen the data of that. I’m not going to accuse him of anything until we see further.”
