Oscar Piastri delivered a commanding performance in Barcelona in the 2025 Formula 1 Spanish GP, securing his fifth win of the 2025 Formula 1 season to extend his lead at the top of the F1 championship standings.
Starting from pole, Piastri controlled the race through several pit stop phases and a late Safety Car that set up a tense six-lap sprint to the chequered flag. Behind him, Lando Norris recovered from losing second to Max Verstappen at the start to reclaim the place and eventually finish runner-up, strengthening McLaren’s charge in both championships.
The race took a sharp turn in the final 10 laps. After Kimi Antonelli’s retirement triggered a Safety Car, most front-runners—including both McLarens—pitted for soft tyres. Verstappen, however, was left on hard tyres and lost ground immediately on the restart.
As Leclerc passed the struggling Red Bull for third, George Russell then engaged in a heated battle with Verstappen, with contact on two occasions. The second incident earned Verstappen a 10-second time penalty, relegating him to tenth place after initially finishing fifth.
F1 Driver Standings after 2025 Spanish GP
Oscar Piastri now leads the standings with 186 points, extending his advantage over teammate Lando Norris, who sits second with 176 points. Max Verstappen remains in third on 137 points, but his collision with George Russell and resulting penalty in Spain further widened the gap to the front. Russell’s solid points haul puts him fourth with 111 points, while Charles Leclerc rounds out the top five on 94. Notably, Nico Hulkenberg has climbed to 11th following a stellar fifth-place finish in Barcelona, and Fernando Alonso finally gets off the mark with his first points of the season.
