Oscar Piastri was quickest in Barcelona and put his McLaren top of the Spanish GP 2025 Free Practice 2 results, just ahead of George Russell in the Mercedes, with Max Verstappen third fastest for Red Bull in the second practice session of the F1 weekend.
The McLaren driver clocked a best lap of 1:12.760 in hot and humid conditions, nearly three-tenths faster than George Russell, with Verstappen and Lando Norris both posting identical times but falling behind due to timing differences. This performance comes on the heels of Lando Norris leading FP1, confirming McLaren’s one-lap speed heading into Saturday’s qualifying.
In the final minutes, Verstappen tried to take a slipstream from Leclerc, who sped up to avoid helping the Red Bull — prompting a chuckle from the Dutchman. Despite the mind games, it was Piastri’s lap that held firm, giving him the top spot heading into Saturday.
Teams will now analyse long-run data before Saturday’s FP3 at 11:30 local time and the all-important qualifying session later in the day.
