CHEQUERED FLAG: Oscar Piastri tops FP2 in Barcelona
It’s Oscar Piastri who proves to be the man to beat in FP2 at the Spanish Grand Prix, with his 1:12.760 being more than good enough to beat his rivals behind.
The Australian led home George Russell, Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, Kimi Antonelli, Fernando Alonso, Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson in the Top 10.
It was a very professional session, with very few drivers making errors. The most notable one of which was Haas’ Oliver Bearman, who took a spin at Turn 10 but did not lasting damage to his car.
Now attention turns to Saturday, which plays host to a vital FP3 session before qualifying. Who will be the quickest on that day?
Five minutes to go: Stroll in the pits
Lance Stroll is the only car left in the pit lane as time runs out in this Free Practice 2 session in Barcelona.
He was very unhappy with his car in the early stages of this Formula 1 session, complaining irritatedly to his engineer.
The Canadian is currently a second off the pace and down in 16th, around half a second behind Fernando Alosn in the other Aston Martin.
16 minutes to go: Teams into their long run sims
The times won’t tumble much in the coming minutes as the teams switch their attention to their long-run simulations. They’re looking around race pace and how the car and tyres behave with higher fuel, particularly when it comes to balance, fuel consumption and degradation.
This is an area of racing that McLaren have generally excelled at this 2025 Formula 1 season.
Oscar Piastri remains top of the timing boards with a 1:12.760, 0.286 ahead of George Russell, and 0.310 ahead of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.
27 minutes to go: Ferrari in trouble?
“This thing’s not drivable,” says Lewis Hamilton as he comes into the pits for Ferrari, struggling for pace as he finds himself 11th in the order and 0.773 off the pace.
Charles Leclerc is fifth, but even he was struggling to get any life out of the car as he looks to get into the mix with McLaren, Red Bull and Mercedes.
Ferrari have a lot of work to do after what appeared to be a solid start to the weekend in FP1.
30 minutes ago: Piastri takes over at the top
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri now takes over at the top of the times and we’re officially into the 1:12s as he puts a 1:12.760 on the board.
That clears George Russell’s Mercedes by 0.286 and that’s more like it for the McLaren boys.
They are the team to beat this weekend.
33 minutes to go: Here comes the challenge to Mercedes
George Russell’s time holds up, but not by a particularly big margin at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in this Free Practice 2 session at the Spanish Grand Prix weekend.
The 1:13.046 is narrowly missed by Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, who are both 0.024 off on the soft tyres. As we speak, Charles Leclerc gets himself up to fourth and he’s 0.214 off for Ferrari.
Then comes Kimi Antonelli in fifth, 0.252 back.
35 minutes to go: Mercedes 1-2 in Barcelona
Mercedes have now bagged themselves a 1-2 in Barcelona, with George Russell ahead of Kimi Antonelli with a 1:13.046.
How will the chasing pack respond to the Silver Arrows’ time?
Are they back in the mix?
42 minutes to go: An angry Lance Stroll out of the car
Lance Stroll is clearly frustrated with his Aston Martin car and complains loudly over the radio that whatever is feeling wrong should be obvious in the data.
He’s even out of the car as the mechanics take a look. His engineer did admit it seemed obvious too, quickly sympathising with the Canadian.
Stroll is currently 16th overall, 1.5 seconds off the pace.
45 minutes to go: Mercedes respond in Spain
George Russell jumps to the top of the times with a 1:13.501 to go ahead of Lando Norris and Max Verstappen.
The Silver Arrows have historically gone very, very well here.
Can they recover this weekend? That’s a step in the right direction.
46 minutes to go: Slight mistake from Verstappen
Max Verstappen makes a very slight error at Turn 10 as he loses the rear of his Red Bull RB21 and skips outside of track limits.
It was nothing too serious and he continues on his merry way, he probably won’t make that mistake again for the rest of the weekend.
Now it’s time to find more speed around the lap.
48 minutes to go: Bearman goes for a spin in Spain
Oliver Bearman runs a little too wide, perhaps slightly disturbed by the dirty air, and he goes for a spin at Turn 3.
That also includes a trip through the gravel for good measure too and he holds up his hand to say sorry.
The Haas driver is currently in 17th, ahead of Esteban Ocon in the other car.
50 minutes to go: Which tyres are teams using?
All drivers are on the medium tyres at the moment, with the sole exception of Alpine’s Franco Colapinto – sporting the hard.
That suggests there isn’t a lot of performance difference between the medium and hard, nor the soft and the medium.
It could be a one-stopper this weekend in that case. Soft-hard for 66 laps.
52 minutes to go: Verstappen in the mix
Max Verstappen now slots into second with a 1:13.910 to get ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri by 0.077 as he slots into second.
There should be more to come from Piastri, who said he drifted his car through Turn 1.
Can the Dutchman take the fight to the McLaren cars?
55 minutes to go: McLaren 1-2 already
Lando Norris has a 1:13.636 to go to the top of the times and he’s already ahead of Oscar Piastri in the sister car by around three tenths.
Norris is already quicker than his FP1 time, and he’s on the medium. Expect the times to continue to tumble in Barcelona.
Fernando Alonso slots into third, just ahead of George Russell and Charles Leclerc.
GREEN FLAG: FP2 begins in Spain
The final Free Practice 2 session as the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, before the Spanish Grand Prix heads to Madrid, is underway with one hour on the clock.
Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari is one of the first cars out onto the circuit.
How far up the order can he get that car today?
Almost time to go in Barcelona
We’re just minutes away from FP2 getting started in Barcelona, a crucial hour for gathering race pace data and refining set-ups to understand what the car doesn’t and doesn’t like.
Who will emerge top of the pile? Lando Norris and McLaren will be the favourites once again.
Here’s some cars from FP1 taking the dive down to Turn 1.
Will Williams respond?
Williams faced a tough opening hour in Spain, the site of their last win all the way back in 2012, as Carlos Sainz could only get himself up to 15th in the order.
They were 1.2 seconds off the pace of Lando Norris, so can they bounce back in FP2? The team have been in fantastic form recently.
Can Red Bull step it up?
Red Bull have enjoyed the high speed circuits on this Formula 1 calendar, taking victories in Imola and Japan as well as almost winning the Saudi Arabian GP too.
It’s no surprise that Max Verstappen wound up second in FP1, but he was almost four tenths back from Lando Norris.
Can Red Bull find the pace they need from their RB21 to get the four-time world champion into the mix?
Welcome to the blog for FP2!
McLaren’s Lando Norris made a statement in FP1 by delivering a 1:13.718 to clear Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by 0.367 and Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari by 0.378.
It seems as though the new FIA technical directive hasn’t impacted the constructors’ championship leaders one single bit.
Can they continue their form in FP2 in around 40 minutes’ time (17:00 CET)? Or will their rivals show signs of catching up?
