Lando Norris was quickest in Barcelona and put his McLaren top of the Spanish GP 2025 Free Practice 1 results, just ahead of Max Verstappen in the Red Bull, with Lewis Hamilton third fastest for Ferrari in the first practice session of the F1 weekend.
With momentum from his Monaco GP victory still fresh, Norris clocked a session-best 1:13.718, showing impressive pace as Formula 1 entered a pivotal European leg of the calendar.
Friday’s first practice session began under warm and sunny skies, with the return of several reserve drivers making headlines early. Among them, Victor Martins made his FP1 debut for Williams, replacing Alex Albon, while Ryo Hirakawa took to the gravel in his Haas after an early off.
Teams spent much of the session gathering data in light of a new FIA Technical Directive targeting front wing flexibility, with cars running various tyre compounds throughout the hour.

Norris pips Verstappen in competitive opening session

Lewis Hamilton, now racing under Ferrari colours, slotted into third, just a fraction behind Verstappen, while his teammate Charles Leclerc managed fourth. Oscar Piastri, fresh off a strong showing in Monaco, rounded out the top five in the second McLaren.
Several rookies and reserve drivers impressed, including Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar, who placed sixth and eighth respectively for Racing Bulls, with Ollie Bearman sandwiched between them in seventh. Yuki Tsunoda and Pierre Gasly completed the top 10.
Behind them, George Russell—an early leader on medium tyres—ended up P11, with Lance Stroll in 12th and Fernando Alonso voicing concerns about his Aston Martin, asking engineers to “check what is going on with the car.” Carlos Sainz, racing with Williams this weekend, placed 15th.
Lower down the order, Gabriel Bortoleto, Kimi Antonelli, and Martins all gained valuable mileage, while Franco Colapinto rounded out the session for Alpine in 20th.
With FP1 now complete, all eyes turn to FP2 as teams continue their preparations under evolving technical regulations and warmer afternoon conditions.
