Singapore GP: How can Red Bull win the F1 constructors’ title this weekend?

Red Bull lead Mercedes by 310 points, with Ferrari a further 45 back in the 2023 F1 Constructors' Championship

-

Red Bull can clinch their second consecutive world constructor’s championship at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, if they outscore Mercedes by 43 points.

The team has been unrelenting during this year’s Formula 1 campaign as they have claimed victory in every single race, and look set to clean-sweep the season.

What was previously an unprecedented achievement now looks very much a reality, as Red Bull are poised to eclipse dominant seasons such as Mercedes in 2014 and 2016, Ferrari in 2002 and 2004, and McLaren in 1988.

How can Red Bull take the title?

Following Sunday’s race there will be seven Grands Prix remaining, along with three Sprint Races which will leave a maximum haul of 353 points to collect.

So should Red Bull take a 1-2 finish in Singapore and Mercedes fail to score a point, they will clinch the sixth constructor’s championship of their F1 history.

Anything less than a Red Bull 1-2 and they will have to wait until the Japanese GP a week later.

If Red Bull take the fastest lap then Mercedes can score a singular point, as the bonus point will nullify the one point gained for finishing 10th.

When can Max Verstappen win the F1 Drivers’ Championship?

The champion-elect leads by 145 points with seven rounds to go plus three sprints but it’s mathematically impossible for him to claim the title in Singapore.

However, it is possible to do so a week later in Japan. Suzuka is the site where he claimed the title in 2022 following a late time penalty for Charles Leclerc.

If he leaves that race with a lead of 180-points, he will claim his third title and draw level with the legendary Ayrton Senna in the process.

But considering the dominant equipment at their disposal, it is possible, but not probable, for Verstappen to gain 35 points over Sergio Perez in two weekends.

For example, if Perez finishes 5th in both races then the title will not be won in Japan.

Thus the likely destination will be in Lusail, Qatar. F1 returns there for the second time having previously raced at the Middle Eastern circuit in 2021.

In 2023, it will feature a Sprint race and is scheduled to be held on October 6-8.
