Sergio Perez slams ‘brutal’ F1 calendar

Sergio Perez is one of the most experienced drivers on the F1 grid after making his debut in 2011

Sergio Perez believes maintaining energy levels will be crucial to surviving Formula 1‘s brutal 2024 calendar which features a record-breaking 24 events.

The 2024 F1 calendar runs from the start of March with this week’s Bahrain Grand Prix to the Abu Dhabi GP on December 8. China returns to the F1 calendar after being absent since 2019, whilst Imola hosts the Emilia Romagna GP in May, a year on from the 2023 edition being cancelled because of flooding in the region.

“It’s too many, we know that it’s too many races,” Perez told select media outlets, including “It’s going to be a brutal calendar for all of us involved in the sport. That’s why it’s important, you know, that we are able to manage our energy levels as best as possible.

“I think 20 races will be great, you know, with keeping up the quality instead of the quantity. But that’s not me to decide. I think once the season starts [it’s] something really important that we plan it well, to make sure that we stay as fresh as possible, you know.

“It’s going to be a lot of travelling throughout the year, a lot of commitments, but just staying as fresh as possible, as fit as possible, will be the main objective.”

New car a step forward

The launch of Red Bull’s RB20 sees the team break away from the concept it used in 2022 and 2023 by introducing a new design for 2024. Notable changes between the RB19 and RB20 include a Mercedes-style cannon cooling package and more vertical side pod inlets.

Red Bull were very competitive in pre-season testing, despite Ferrari setting the fastest laps, and are favourites going into the new season.

“I think we’ve taken some good steps forward,” explained Perez. “And it will be interesting to see what we are able to do for the coming weeks, you know because I think it’s really important that we are able that we have a good base and that we are able to develop it through the season.

“I think it just shows the hunger that is in this team. You know, we’ve had such a dominant car that you wouldn’t imagine us changing the concept as much, you know, and I think it’s really brave from Red Bull to do that.”
