Sergio Perez details conversations about Red Bull renewal after Marko comments

It's been almost a full year since Sergio Perez hasn't beaten Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen in an F1 Grand Prix

Sergio Perez revealed he’s optimistic about his prospects of re-signing with Red Bull beyond the end of his current deal in 2024, after Helmut Marko comments appeared to back the incumbent despite strong speculation around the seat.

Perez last beat teammate Max Verstappen in a grand prix in Azerbaijan in late April 2023, but arrives at the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix 50 weeks later after a positive start to the season and hoping to continue to push his case for a contract extension.

Perez enjoyed a strong 2024 Japanese GP, qualifying just half a tenth behind Verstappen and showing his wheel-to-wheel nous too with a series of impressive overtakes on his way to second place.

Though he’s been unable to pick up the pieces on the last two occasions Max Verstappen‘s failed to win, Fernando Alonso‘s recent contract extension at Aston Martin ruled out another contender for Perez‘s seat and he was buoyant when asked if he’s optimistic about his Red Bull future.

“Yes, I am. We’ve been together for a few years already, and I think it will be a pretty quick conversation to know what direction to go in,” Perez told Sky Sports. “We all want to continue, so I expect it to be a matter of time.”

Alonso‘s renewal at Aston Martin? Every week the contenders change, but that’s normal, I think until there are signatures, everyone is a possible rival.”

Perez also recently received backing from an usual quarter, in the shape of Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko. The Austrian was critical of the Mexican in 2023 as he only picked up two second-places after the Miami GP, while team principal Christian Horner has usually been the stronger advocate for Perez.

However, Marko has clearly been impressed in 2023, while also praising RB‘s Yuki Tsunoda who’s had the clear upper hand in his intra-team battle with Daniel Ricciardo so far in 2024.

“It is clear that Checo is currently having his best season since he joined us,” Marko told Austrian publication Kleine Zeitung ahead of the Chinese GP. “If he maintains these performances, like the one in qualifying in Japan, then he is certainly the best option for Red Bull in 2025.

“He is a worker for the team and has now also realized that the radically different approach he chose last year in terms of setup was the wrong one. Now the car is closer to Max‘s set-up and that helps him.

“Yuki had a great start to the season and is no longer the hot runner he used to be. There have only been four races, so you can’t say much yet. But he has Daniel under control, even if it was close in Japan.”
