Sergio Perez backs Christian Horner as Red Bull team principal amid Verstappen feud

Amid the ongoing scandal involving Christian Horner and Jos Verstappen, the Mexican has reiterated that Red Bull are behind their team principal

With speculation as to Christian Horner’s future at Red Bull very much being debated, Sergio Perez has come out and publicly backed his beleaguered team principal as the scandal involving a female employee refuses to die down.

After being cleared of any wrongdoing in an internal Red Bull investigation, Horner has seen leaks of alleged text messages involving himself and the woman in question, and Jos Verstappen, father of star driver Max, publicly call for him to step down.

That said, Perez is convinced Horner is an important part of Red Bull and is fully focused on the racing side of operations, despite furore surrounding his leadership of the team.

“Yes, he does,” Perez told the press, when asked directly if Horner has his backing as Red Bull team principal. “And I think not only my support but, the full team is fully behind him.

“He’s obviously a very important person in our organisation, and the job that he’s done over the years, speak for themselves.  And I think Christian is a key team player in this organisation. And I think he’s fully focused on on the racing side.”

“I don’t know what’s going on. At the end of the day, I’m a racing driver and that’s what I’m here to do. I don’t get into politics, I drive the car as quickly as I can, as fast as I can. I prepare the very best I can.

“Then I go home, and I have a life out of this sport. I’ve never been really part of what’s going on, outside of the sport. So my main focus is to deliver on track.”

Red Bull could explode

Following the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix, Horner was adamant that he would remain in charge of Red Bull. The team bagged their first 1-2 of the new Formula 1 season and he is no longer under investigation.

Then came Jos Verstappen’s bombshell announcement that if Horner remained at the helm of Red Bull, the team would explode and the situation could not stay as is.

“There is tension here while he remains in position,” Jos Verstappen told the Daily Mail after the Bahrain GP.

“The team is in danger of being torn apart. It can’t go on the way it is. It will explode. He is playing the victim, when he is the one causing the problems.”

That prompted rumours that Max Verstappen might leave Red Bull with Mercedes touted as a possible destination given Jos’ meetings in Bahrain with Toto Wolff, team principal of the Silver Arrows.
