Red Bull upgrades: What upgrades have Red Bull brought to Spanish GP?

The Austrian team will be hoping their changes can restore their pace advantage over their F1 rivals

Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez will be hoping Red Bull upgrades at the Formula 1 2024 Spanish Grand Prix will bring a timely improvement to their car in Barcelona at a crucial time in the season.

It comes after several races of complaints from Verstappen, who has been frustrated with bottoming during practice sessions and violent vibrations on the suspension, which caused him to stay off the kerbs at the Canadian GP. Perez also documented how he was deeply unhappy with their “fundamental issues”.

Red Bull brought their first major upgrade of the season to the Emilia Romagna GP at Imola, with the biggest change being made to the floor. There was also an entirely new front wing design brought forward.

But in relative terms compared to Ferrari and McLaren, their upgrades haven’t delivered a tangible improvement to boost their race pace. And the fact Carlos Sainz, Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris have all won races this year indicates Red Bull are in danger of being caught by their rivals.

That has forced the team to be more bold in their development approach, and with Pierre Wache now the leading figure in their design team following Adrian Newey’s impending departure, the pressure is on to bring improvements for the Spanish GP to put Red Bull back on track.

Red Bull upgrades: What difference will they make?

The constructors’ leaders will race in Spain with modified sidepods, a new bonnet and a new floor. The Formula 1 team have also introduced a new rear wing for Verstappen and Perez’s RB20, which may help increase their straight-line speed and rear grip.

Red Bull have announced five changes will be made to their RB20 car to improve performance around the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The Austrian manufacturer have further revised the geometry of its radiator inlets, which will result in a higher pressure of air being fed there to minimise the area of aerodynamically damaging outlet louvres.

In addition, there is a change to the engine cover side panels and amendments have been made to the floor to align it with the new bodywork. These Red Bull upgrades have been made with recognition that there are warm-weather races in Europe coming up, with Barcelona the first before travelling to Austria, Britain and Hungary ahead of the summer break.

The span of the lower beam wing has been extended to merge into a new endplate geometry, which is likely to give more load from the beam wing itself. As such, the lower part of the main wing’s endplates have been moved outboard.

Red Bull say that three of their changes are circuit-specific, while the other two modifications have been made with the hope of an improvement in the car’s general performance at other circuits too.
