Red Bull not thinking about perfect 2024

Red Bull are looking to win a third consecutive constructors' title and Max Verstappen is targeting a fourth straight drivers' championship in 2024

Red Bull boss Christian Horner has played down his team’s chances of completing a perfect 2024 Formula 1 campaign ahead of pre-season testing.

After winning the drivers and constructors’ championships in 2022, Red Bull kicked on in 2023, easily retaining their titles and winning 21 of the season’s 22 Grand Prix.

But a perfect season was one of the few things Red Bull didn’t achieve in 2023 after coming unstuck at the Singapore Grand Prix, with triple champion Max Verstappen finishing fifth and Sergio Perez eighth as Carlos Sainz won the race.

“Setting a target of winning all of the races will be very difficult,” explained Horner to selected media outlets, including Total-Motorsport.com. “I mean, we achieved 21 out of 22 last year, and only Singapore got away from us.

“So technically, we can improve, but logically, there is going to be convergence with stable regulations, we can see other cars have had influence from [the] RB19. We’re expecting other teams to converge.

“I think the team have done a wonderful job on the RB20, they haven’t sat on their laurels, and you can see they’ve pushed the boundaries with the car, so we’ll only see when we get on track in Bahrain, the relative pecking order for the start of the season.”

Verstappen suspects it will be tougher to win in 2024

Of Red Bull’s 21 victories, 19 were achieved by Verstappen, helping him secure his third consecutive world championship and becoming only the fifth driver in F1’s history to accomplish a hat trick of titles.

Verstappen also enjoyed a run of ten consecutive race wins, beginning at May’s Miami GP and ending at the Singapore GP in September. The run of victories helped Verstappen beat Alberto Ascari’s 1952 record of the highest win percentage in a season in the sport’s history, with the Dutchman winning 86 percent of the races.

However, the gap between Red Bull and their rivals will likely be closer in 2024, with the team’s rivals likely to have taken inspiration from the team’s 2023 all-conquering RB19 over the winter.

“I mean, these kinds of things are very tough, I think it’s also not our goal,” said Verstappen when asked about a perfect season. “I think it’s just about trying to deliver another very competitive car, and from my side, of course, I’ll try to deliver the best I can. But that depends on a lot of things that have to come together.

“So I guess only time will tell, you know how quick we are. And, of course, also around us, people are learning more and more. It’s up to us how great the season is going to be because if you have more natural competition with different teams, it’s even harder to win races.”
