A scintillating performance from Max Verstappen saw the Red Bull driver take the 2021 Dutch Grand Prix win, and put himself back top of the F1 Drivers’ Championship.

Verstappen led from start to finish as title rival Lewis Hamilton didn’t have an answer to the Dutchman’s pace eventually finishing 20.9 seconds behind the Red Bull driver as he took the fastest lap of the race. As a result, Verstappen now holds a three point lead over Hamilton in the Drivers’ Championship.

Elsewhere, Pierre Gasly maintained his starting position of fourth, ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Alpine driver Fernando Alonso.

Reaction from Verstappen

After bringing the Red Bull home in front of the Dutch fans, Verstappen was understandably overcome with the reaction from the Orange Army!

“As you can hear, it’s incredible,” Verstappen said after the race. “Obviously the expectations were high going into the weekend and it’s never easy to fulfil that, but I’m just so happy to win here, to take the lead in the championship as well.

“It’s just an amazing day. The whole crowd… it’s incredible. Mercedes tried to make it difficult for us but we countered them all the time really well. We can be really pleased with the whole team performance today.”

Hamilton gracious in defeat

Hamilton tried everything to get past Verstappen during the race, as Mercedes also used the advantage of having two cars at the front, but ultimately the Red Bull had too much pace.

“What a race, what a crowd,” Lewis Hamilton exclaimed. “Honestly it’s been an amazing weekend. Max did a great job, congratulations to him.

“I gave it absolutely everything today, flat-out. I pushed as hard as I could. But they were just too quick for us.”
