Pierre Gasly calls for patience ahead of F1 testing

Pierre Gasly enters his second season with Alpine after a strong 2023 campaign

Pierre Gasly has admitted Alpine must be patient with its new car concept ahead of F1 pre-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit.

Gasly came into his maiden campaign with Alpine at risk of being one point away from a race ban after accumulating 10 penalty points on his superlicence throughout 2022. Fortunately for Gasly, he avoided picking up a race ban and scored points in four of the first six races in 2023.

In late August, Gasly secured his first podium since the 2021 Azerbaijan GP, with a gutsy drive to third at the Dutch GP after starting from a lowly 12th on the grid.

For 2024, Alpine will look to rebound from a disappointing 2023 with its radically different A524, which has a stripped-down livery designed in collaboration with Argentinian artist Felipe Pantone.

“It’s my second year with the team, I’m feeling a lot better,” admitted a confident Gasly to selected media outlets, including Total-Motorsport.com.

“I mean, I know [with] the old team, at that time, last year, I had met the people I was going to work with only once or twice, I didn’t know much and was thinking a lot of energy trying to get up to speed with the team.

“So I must say, I’m feeling physically, in the best shape I’ve ever been and mentally in a great place. I feel a great atmosphere, good attitude, good spirits in the team with a desire to improve and really move forward.

“Now we got to see what we can do with that car. It’s a new concept, it’s a pretty aggressive approach. We know already we started from a new piece of paper, and we’ll have to be patient with that car there is potential, but we’ll have to see where we start in Bahrain.

“Visually, it might not be very different, but it is when you look into details, and obviously, we’ve been aware of all the changes from last year in terms of suspensions, aero, chassis, the way that the power unit is integrated within the car. So it does bring a lot of differences, which all small details added together has a pretty big impact on car behaviour and car potential.

“So it does look good, but I don’t really care about it. It’s mainly about the performance, which interests me, and we’ll have to find that out in Bahrain.”

Recovery more important than ever

Formula 1’s 2024 calendar is the biggest in the sport’s history, with 24 events set to take place over the next nine months. The season will start with the Bahrain GP on Saturday, March 2, followed by the Saudi Arabian GP held a week later.

The Japanese GP moves from its traditional autumn slot to early April, with China also returning to the F1 calendar after last hosting a race in 2019. The 2024 season includes three triple headers and will finish on December 8 in Abu Dhabi.

In addition to the 24 races, six Sprints will take place at the Chinese, Miami, Austrian, Qatar, United States and Brazilian GP. The addition of the Sprints means drivers will compete in 30 races throughout 2024 and are likely to test both the drivers’ physical and mental fitness.

“Recovery is more important than ever now in Formula 1,” admitted Gasly. “We’ve got to be on top of our game in all areas, whether it’s nutrition recovery, training, mental preparation it’s just very draining throughout the year.

“Where before we could get away with a few things with 17 races right now to commit to Formula 1, you’ve got to give up a lot on your personal life and accept it. It’s just being aware of that and finding the right balance to get the maximum out of yourself.”
