Perez remains solely focused on racing ahead of crucial 2024

Sergio Perez is one of 13 drivers without a contract at the end of 2024

Sergio Perez has reiterated he is solely focused on-track matters and not on his Formula 1 future after a busy winter in the driver market ahead of the new 2024 season.

Perez‘s current Red Bull deal runs out at the end of 2024, with 12 drivers including Carlos Sainz, Esteban Ocon and Daniel Ricciardo also out of contract after this season.

The driver market has been in full swing over the winter of 2024, with Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris signing new deals with Ferrari and McLaren, respectively. The biggest shock of the winter was Lewis Hamilton, who announcing he would leave Mercedes to join Leclerc at Ferrari in 2025.

“I’m sure that most of the drivers are going to be willing to get things done a lot earlier in the year,” predicted Perez to select media outlets, including Total-Motorsport.com. “But it’s just the approach you have, you know, from my side, I’m just focusing on having a great year, the rest always takes care of it.

“As long as you’re performing on track, the rest always comes in place. So I’m not really bothered about it. It’s my 14th season in F1. So, for me, my main target is keeping [things] well on track.”

Hoping to right the wrongs after a tricky 2023

Despite finishing runners-up in the drivers’ championship to Max Verstappen, Perez had a tricky period of form in 2023, including a run of five consecutive Q3 misses beginning at the 2023 Monaco GP.

One of Perez‘s lowest points came at the 2023 Japanese GP, where he endured a nightmare race, making contact with Hamilton at Turn 1 and losing his front wing. After receiving a five-second penalty for overtaking under the yellow flags, Perez collided with Kevin Magnussen, earning him another five-second time penalty. Perez was initially retired by Red Bull, but to avoid a grid penalty for the Qatar GP, he was sent back out to serve his penalty before retiring again.

Following his Suzuka nightmare, Perez regained momentum, securing four top-five finishes in the final five races of 2023, including a third-place finish at the Las Vegas GP.

“It’s very important that we learn what went wrong, learn from our mistakes, I think we understood a lot of things,” added Perez. “It’s my fourth year with Red Bull, and I do expect to be at my best.

“I think with the changes we’ve done to the car, it’s all about improving and learning with the car, growing with the car. It’s a long season, you know, so it doesn’t really matter where you start in Bahrain, it’s where you finish in Abu Dhabi.

“So it’s a massive season, it’s just important to have that progression. That will be my main focus for this year.”
