Oscar Piastri takes commanding Spanish GP win as Verstappen dropped to 10th for clash with Russell

McLaren scores a 1-2 finish at the 2025 Spanish GP, while Max Verstappen tumbles to 10th after a post-race penalty for aggressive driving

Oscar Piastri delivered a commanding drive to secure the win at the 2025 Spanish GP leading a McLaren one-two and extending his lead in the Formula 1 championship.

The Australian converted pole into a clean getaway and stayed composed through a tactical contest marked by varying pit stop strategies, a late-race Safety Car, and high drama involving Max Verstappen and George Russell at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

At the start, Piastri capitalized on his front-row advantage while Verstappen launched a bold move around the outside of Lando Norris to take second.

Despite losing the position early, Norris responded decisively, reclaiming the spot before the first pit window opened. However, Red Bull’s undercut gamble paid off initially, with Verstappen briefly snatching the lead after stopping for new soft tyres.

McLaren’s response was swift. As Piastri resumed control following Verstappen’s second stop, questions lingered about whether the Dutchman would attempt a bold three-stop strategy — a decision that gained traction as tyre wear proved challenging under the hot Barcelona sun.

Verstappen did indeed make a third stop, aiming to make use of fresher rubber, but the race took a new turn when Kimi Antonelli’s stricken Mercedes triggered a Safety Car.

“It was a bit of a surprise to see Max try and three-stop and it nearly worked for him. But it was a great weekend, the pace was good and just really proud. A much better bounce back from Monaco. A superb weekend,” Piastri said after the win at the Spanish GP.

“Hard to complain, it has been a great year and this weekend has been exactly the kind of weekend I’ve been looking for. It is a lot of fun winning races at the moment.”

Strategy shake-up at the front after Safety Car

With six laps to go, the Safety Car bunched the field together and forced most of the leaders to pit again. While McLaren had softs available, Verstappen was fitted with hards — a significant disadvantage in the sprint to the flag.

On the restart, Charles Leclerc passed the struggling Red Bull, and Verstappen soon found himself locked in a heated battle with George Russell.

A chaotic sequence saw Verstappen forced off-track before being instructed to give the position back. Moments later, the two came to blows again as Verstappen appeared to force Russell off the racing line, resulting in a 10-second time penalty handed down by the stewards.

While the clash between the former world champion and the Mercedes driver grabbed headlines, Piastri remained unbothered at the front.

He pulled away from the field after the restart and crossed the line more than two seconds ahead of Norris, notching up his fifth win of the season and increasing his championship lead to 10 points over his teammate.

Leclerc secured third for Ferrari, while Russell came home fourth. Nico Hulkenberg was one of the standout performers, finishing fifth for Sauber after charging through the field from 15th on the grid.

Further back, Lewis Hamilton finished sixth after team orders saw him yield to Leclerc early on, with Isack Hadjar delivering another composed drive to take seventh for Racing Bulls.

Pierre Gasly brought home points for Alpine in eighth, and Fernando Alonso finally opened his 2025 account with ninth place at his home race. After the time penalty, Verstappen was classified tenth.

The race saw several retirements, including Alex Albon after contact with Liam Lawson, while Lance Stroll did not start due to medical issues with his hand and wrist.
