Mick Schumacher explains WEC differences to F1 and eyes Le Mans glory

Mick Schumacher has outlined some of the differences between driving an Alpine LMDh car and a Formula 1 car, after being confirmed as part of the French team for the World Endurance Championship in 2024.

Schumacher tested an Alpine Hypercar in November ahead of his full WEC debut, as he makes a step away from the F1 paddock. He will still be involved to an extent as he carries on as Mercedes‘ reserve driver.

“Obviously it’s very different,” Schumacher told the press. “I’m not gonna lie, it feels very heavy, it feels very different, and maybe sometimes claustrophobic as well, because it’s the first time for me that I don’t see my tyres, and I don’t get the wind in my face.

“So it was obviously very different but I wouldn’t necessarily say it was the deciding factor [about joining the series.]

“I think it was definitely already on my mind [before the test] that I wanted to commit to this. You have so many manufacturers jumping into it right now and the Le Mans 24 Hours has always been a target of many drivers, even for drivers these days – they want to compete in it.”

The showpiece event on the WEC calendar is the Le Mans 24 Hours, which Schumacher will compete in for the first time.

“I guess as every driver you want to be winning something,” said Schumacher. “I guess Le Mans is the biggest out there. I think for me the interesting part is that you will be going through 24 hours and you want to see that flag.”

Schumacher also suggested that his WEC foray won’t mark the end of his F1 pursuits in the future, having last driven in the series for Haas in 2022.

“I guess in general, everybody understands this, when you do these discussions outside of Formula 1,” Schumacher continued.

“I think everybody understands that if there’s something opening, you’re hoping that they will let you go. So in that sense, you know, you can go in with rather comfortable mindset in, let’s say, discussing about what’s happening next year.”
