Mick Schumacher reveals Sebastian Vettel contact over Alpine drive

Mick Schumacher will drive for Alpine in WEC 2024 and be Mercedes' F1 reserve driver

Mick Schumacher has revealed he spoke to Sebastian Vettel about his move to Alpine as he links up with the French manufacturer in the World Endurance Championship for 2024.

Schumacher will be back racing in 2024 as he joins the endurance series at an exciting time, with a host of big manufacturers entering the fray.

The German lost his Formula 1 seat with Haas at the end of 2022 after two seasons. Schumacher and Vettel struck up a close friendship during their time sharing the F1 grid in 2021 and 2022.

“I spoke to Timo Glock and I briefly spoke with Sebastian about it as well,” Schumacher told the media.

“This has been a factor, I think he knows so much about motorsport that it was also a very clear point for me to go and ask him about his opinion over it.”

Schumacher excited to be joining WEC

Schumacher will continue to be Mercedes‘ reserve driver and hasn’t ruled out a return to F1 in the future.

The former Haas driver explained how excited he was about joining WEC, including racing at the Le Mans 24 Hours in June.

“It is an upcoming championship in general, so I wouldn’t call it a sidestep. I think it has its charm and challenges just as much as for Formula 1 does,” said Schumacher.

“I’m doing a dual program with the reserve driver’s seat role [with Mercedes] to keep contact to F1, but definitely I see it as a challenge and I see it as something where also I as a driver can develop further hopefully as well.

“If my way leads back to Formula 1 one day, then I’ll be able to take that development that I have done in that series over to F1 again.”
