Kimi Antonelli sprung a surprise in Florida as the Italian put his Mercedes top of the Miami GP 2025 Sprint Qualifying results, just ahead of Oscar Piastri in the McLaren with Lando Norris third fastest as the F1 Sprint weekend begins.
Antonelli delivered a statement performance as the 18-year-old Mercedes rookie secured his first-ever Formula 1 pole position in sprint qualifying. In just his sixth F1 race weekend, Antonelli produced a sensational final lap to top the timesheets with a 1:26.918, narrowly beating championship leader Oscar Piastri by just 0.045 seconds.
It was a remarkable feat for the teenager, who has shown flashes of promise this season but had yet to outqualify his more experienced teammate George Russell — until now. Lando Norris backed up McLaren’s form with the third-fastest time, while Max Verstappen, fresh from the birth of his first child, settled for fourth in his Red Bull. The Dutchman was only 0.195s off the pace but couldn’t match Antonelli’s speed in the final sector.
Russell had to settle for fifth, 0.309 seconds behind Antonelli, as Mercedes enjoyed their best qualifying showing of the 2025 campaign to date. It was also the first time this season that Antonelli has led a qualifying session over his teammate, underlining his rapid development in his debut year.
