Oscar Piastri extended his lead at the top of the 2025 drivers’ championship with an impressive victory at the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, with McLaren teammate Lando Norris taking P2.
Pole-sitter Max Verstappen was only able to finish in fourth after a race that featured plenty of, whilst Mercedes‘ George Russell secured yet another podium by finishing third.

Oscar Piastri reflects on another stunning Formula 1 win
It’s three-in-a-row for Oscar Piastri as he takes firmer control of the drivers’ standings by edging away from Lando Norris.
Showing great conviction, he quickly picked off a punchy Max Verstappen and then opened up a good gap to work with nd this is something he pointed as the key to his success.
“Qualifying was one of my trickiest sessions of the year,” Piastri told F1 TV. “So to come away and win is an impressive result.
“A bit of argy-bargy at Turn 1 which helped me a bit. I was aware enough to avoid Max coming through in Turn 1. From that point onwards I knew I had a good pace advantage and clearly the car was unbelievable.
“The first stint was really strong. The hard stint, I was struggling a bit, so it was a good thing I built that gap in the first stint. Towards the end I started to get things a bit more under control, so there’s still definitely some things to work on.”
Norris after F1 2025 Miami GP: “Damned if I do, damned if I don’t”
Lando Norris came into this race with a good chance to win and potentially take back the lead of the standings from Oscar Piastri, but found himself watching that gap only grow after a Lap 1 tangle with Max Verstappen.
The McLaren had tried to go around the outside of the Red Bull, but the defending champion wasn’t having any of it and in his eagerness to keep the place, suffered oversteer and forced Norris to take evading action.
It was another dramatic moment between the pair, so how does he feel about it?
“It’s never the best feeling,” Norris said to F1 TV of finishing second. “But the team have done an amazing job, so I can’t fault them at all. Good pit stops, great pace, we were up the road. It was a good feeling but Oscar drove well.
“Max put up a good fight as always and I paid the price, but it’s the way it is. What can I say? If I don’t go for it, people complain. If I go for it, people complain, so you can’t win. But it is the way it is with Max, it’s crash or don’t pass.
“Unless you get it really right and you put him in the perfect position, then you can just about get there. I paid the price for not doing a good enough job today, but I’m still happy with second.”
George Russell gives a devastating warning of McLaren
George Russell comes away from the F1 2025 Miami GP with another podium in the bag for Mercedes in what was a challenging weekend for the star.
But he hints that might be all they can do after McLaren finished 32 seconds ahead, as he reflects on the dominant speed of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
“Really happy to come away with P3,” Russell told F1 TV. “I’ve been struggling this weekend personally and always on the backfoot.
“Ultimately when it mattered I got a really good result.
“Well done to the McLarens. They are just down the road.”
OSCAR PIASTRI WINS F1 2025 MIAMI GP
Oscar Piastri manages his F1 2025 Miami GP to perfection and wins from fourth of the grid to make it three-in-a-row as the McLaren driver extends his championship lead ahead of Lando Norris and Max Verstappen.
Norris, who started next to Verstappen from second, saw his chances disappear when the Red Bull ran him wide and he could frustratingly see his teammate take the chequered flag ahead before him by a matter of 4.6 seconds.
It’s a big blow in a championship that will be an all-McLaren affair after the pair finished an astonishing 37 seconds ahead of George Russell’s Mercedes, with pole sitter Verstappen almost 40 seconds off the lead for Red Bull.
Lap 56/57: Leclerc drops Hamilton
Charles Leclerc opens up a 1.5-second gap to Lewis Hamilton behind and seems to settle the squabble between the Ferrari cars.
He’s making small progress on Kimi Antonelli ahead, but it isn’t going to be enough to catch the Mercedes before the race ends.
Lap 54/57: Battle for the lead settles down
Oscar Piastri’s now responded to Lando Norris and extended a 3.5 second gap back up to four seconds with a handful of laps left.
He will win the F1 2025 Miami GP and make it three wins in a row as long as he keeps it on the road.
Lap 53/57: Hamilton swaps places
Lewis Hamilton swaps places with Charles Leclerc at the first opportunity once he’s informed.
He’s far from pleased, however.
“You want me to let him past as well?,” Hamilton tells Riccardo Adami upon being informed of the gap to Carlos Sainz behind.
Lap 52/57: Hamilton told to swap places
Lewis Hamilton is now told to swap places with Charles Leclerc, who feels he can go faster but doesn’t know how much by.
The Brit is told to do the swap into Turn 11, but is yet to do so.
Kimi Antonelli is 2.2 seconds up the road ahead of the Ferrari pair.
Lap 50/57: Norris still closing in
Lando Norris has the gap to Oscar Piastri down to 3.6 seconds now but laps are starting to run out for the British McLaren driver.
Meanwhile, the gap is 2.6 seconds to Kimi Antonelli for Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari as Charles Leclerc also follows the Brit closely behind.
Lap 48/57: Gap to almost four seconds
Lando Norris really is pushing as he closes the gap to Oscar Piastri down to four seconds but McLaren’s CEO, Zak Brown, believes the Australian is simply managing his race.
If he has some extra pace then he’s going to have to show it soon.
Lap 47/57: Leclerc all over Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton has struggled to kick on to catch Kimi Antonelli ahead and now Charles Leclerc is coming back at the Brit.
The Ferrari behind is just 0.7 back. Leclerc’s now pushing for team orders by pointing out his tyres are overheating.
Lap 46/57: Gap under five seconds
Lando Norris is now finding some serious pace over Oscar Piastri, something isn’t quite right in the Australian’s McLaren car as he continues to lead the F1 2025 Miami GP.
Will we see a battle for the lead between the teammates for the first time since the season opener in Melbourne?
Lap 44/57: Gap down to six seconds for Norris
Lando Norris has taken another half a second out of Oscar Piastri over the last few laps.
Is the Australian in the lead slow, or is he simply managing his race and tyres to the chequered flag in Miami?
Lap 42/57: Your order with 15 laps to go
Oscar Piastri leads Lando Norris by 6.3 seconds in Florida, with George Russell 25 seconds back from the McLarens in third place.
The Mercedes is 1.7s ahead of Max Verstappen, who leads Alex Albon, Kimi Antonelli, Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz and Yuki Tsunoda in the Top 10.
Will Norris manage to catch his teammate?
Lap 41/57: Norris catching Piastri slowly but surely
Lando Norris has the gap to Oscar Piastri down to 6.5 seconds in Miami. He’s slowly but surely catching his teammate.
However, at current pace the laps are going to run out for the British McLaren driver.
He might need to get lucky with a safety car once again.
Lap 39/57: Ferrari finally let Hamilton through
Charles Leclerc has finally been told to let Lewis Hamilton through and he does so at the first opportunity.
Ferrari have wasted several laps in their pursuit of Kimi Antonelli, Alex Albon and Max Verstappen though.
Hamilton was right to point out the poor teamwork. Ferrari baffled by simple decisions once again.
Hamilton demanding team orders
Lewis Hamilton is on the quicker medium tyre and has the same equipment as Charles Leclerc ahead, and he’s wasting no time letting Ferrari know he’s faster.
Ferrari are yet to switch the cars around though and they actually tell the seven-time world champion they’ve got no intentions of doing so just yet.
“Man, you guys…,” Hamilton says over the radio.
Lap 37/57: McLarens 20 seconds ahead of third
Lando Norris is 20 seconds ahead of George Russell in Miami, and Oscar Piastri is 27 seconds ahead of the Mercedes.
McLaren have some crazy pace, it’s hard to see how anyone will catch them throughout the rest of this F1 season.
Liam Lawson’s RB retires from the race, potentially with damage from his Lap 1 incident with Jack Doohan and Alpine.
Lap 35/57: Hamilton almost gets two places for free!
Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc are so locked in on their battle at the F1 2025 Miami GP that both go deep into Turn 1 as the race resumes.
It almost lets Lewis Hamilton pick both off with a switch back move but Leclerc manages to hold onto the place in the other Ferrari.
Leclerc 7th, Hamilton 8th, Sainz 9th.
Lap 33/57: Virtual Safety Car deployed again
Gabriel Bortoleto’s Sauber is out of the race with a power unit failure.
That brings the Brazilian’s first outing in Miami to a premature, and disappointing, end.
FIVE SECOND PENALTY FOR YUKI TSUNODA
Yuki Tsunoda collects a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane.
The Red Bull locked up both tyres on entry so it was a slam dunk.
He’s currently running in 11th, but with that penalty it’s actually 13th.
Lap 31/57: Great move by Albon
Alex Albon makes a sensational move on Kimi Antonelli into Turn 1 and puts his Williams up to fifth with a smart cutback.
These could be huge points for the team with one Haas out of the race and the other in 14th. Carlos Sainz is close in seventh too.
Lap 30/57: McLarens pit
Both Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris take the chance to pit from first and second under the VSC and they comfortably hold their positions in the F1 2025 Miami GP.
George Russell also pits and manages to get ahead of Max Verstappen because of it, the Mercedes leads the Red Bull by around one second in Miami.
Lap 29/57: Virtual Safety Car deployed, Bearman OUT
Oliver Bearman is out of the F1 2025 Miami GP with a mechanical failure on his Haas car.
It works out wonderfully for Lewis Hamilton, who pits and rejoins the race in 10th having saved 10 seconds as everyone drives around slower.
Hamilton’s on the mediums. He will be fast.
Lap 28/57: Verstappen passes Hamilton
Mac Verstappen’s now up to sixth on track as he moves past Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari with DRS.
Hamilton’s yet to stop.
Lap 27/57: Verstappen pits in response
Max Verstappen responds to Antonelli’s stop and the undercut hasn’t worked at all for Mercedes, he’s now three seconds behind the Red Bull.
The 18-year-old has to look in his wing mirrors though, Alex Albon is close behind in ninth…
Lap 26/57: Antonelli pits
Kimi Antonelli is the first of the leaders to pit as Mercedes look for an undercut on Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. He’s out onto the track on the medium tyres.
But with a 4.4 second stop to avoid an unsafe release, due to Carlos Sainz pitting at the same time, will that work?
The young Italian is back into the race in ninth.
Laps 21-23: Ocon and Hamilton enjoy a great battle
Esteban Ocon is putting up a stern defence against Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari and is doing just enough to fend off the seven-time world champion for Haas.
But he can’t keep the act up forever against a quicker car, and after some brave throttle control through Turns 11-16, Hamilton finally gets the fruits of his labour.
He blasts past the Frenchman with DRS into Turn 17 and is now into the points in 10th.
Ocon pits.
Lap 20/57: Take a breath from the drama
That was an intense 20 laps at the front with battles for the lead between Oscar Piastri, Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.
So let’s take a moment to review the running order as we approach half distance in Florida.
Piastri leads Norris by nine seconds, although the second McLaren has the fastest lap and is on the charge.
Verstappen is third and five seconds back. He’s ahead of Antonelli, Russell, Albon, Sainz, Leclerc, Tsunoda and Ocon.
Some drivers near the back of the field have just pitted for fresh tyres, expecting the rain shower to miss the track.
Lap 19/57: Sainz passes Albon
Alex Albon appears to be dealing with a water leak issue but that’s not stopping the Thai-Brit from racing hard in Miami.
The Williams driver puts up a stern defence against Carlos Sainz, but the Spaniard eventually slips through and is up to seventh.
Although the transponder shows him ahead again at the moment, it seems Sainz gave the place back up after leaving the track.
Lap 18/57: Norris passes Verstappen for good
Lando Norris now gets past Max Verstappen into Turn 11 with a nice move and he then disappears through the chicane.
The Brit holds onto the place and now he’s up to second, and that seems about as much as he can hope for today with Oscar Piastri leading by a commanding nine seconds.
Lap 17/57: Norris forces Verstappen off the road
Lando Norris now forces Max Verstappen off the road, but that might not be legal if both cars left the track.
And a frustrated Red Bull wastes no time sending it up the inside into the last corner to snatch the place back! Great drama in Florida!
Verstappen second, Norris third.
Lap 15/57: Norris run off the road … Again
Max Verstappen is now under pressure from McLaren’s Lando Norris as his chances of winning the F1 2025 Miami GP seem to be evaporating before his eyes.
However, he’s sternly trying to defend second and that includes running Norris off the road for the second time in this race as the Brit tries to hang it out around the outside.
Verstappen’s blaming his brakes for his performance.
Lap 14/57: Verstappen makes a mistake and Piastri leads the race
Oscar Piastri gets into DRS range of Max Verstappen and pulls slightly ahead on the run down to Turn 1.
Verstappen throws the car up the inside into Turn 1 but goes too deep and the McLaren slides past the Red Bull on the exit.
Piastri leads the F1 2025 Miami GP.
Lap 12/57: Piastri locks up
Oscar Piastri has a slight lock-up into Turn 1 and it lets Max Verstappen disappear up the road for a moment or two.
“Defend the inside. Make him work for it,” says Gianpiero Lambiase and his driver is obliging him.
The good news for Lando Norris? this is bringing him right back into play. He’s gained a second on Verstappen through this drama.
Lap 10/57: Verstappen-Piastri duel for lead of Miami GP
Max Verstappen’s comfort with a loose rear end keeps him in the lead of the Miami GP after Oscar Piastri sets him up through the final corner.
The Red Bull manages to just keep enough traction to cling onto the lead from the Australian, but it won’t be long before the new father is overtaken at this rate.
Lap 9/57: McLarens rapid in Miami
McLaren have serious pace in Miami.
Oscar Piastri is just half a second behind Max Verstappen but hasn’t managed to make a move just yet.
Meanwhile Lando Norris is past Kimi Antonelli and up to the podium places, but he’s now four seconds behind the leading duo.
The damage from Lap 1 has already been done.
Rain due on Lap 14
McLaren tell Oscar Piastri rain is due on Lap 14 and will hit Turns 7 and 17 first.
Will we see the intermediates out shortly?
Tom Stallard says it will hit the entire circuit. Do not look away.
Lap 7/57: Norris up to 4th
Lando Norris makes a nice move on George Russell to snatch fourth place from the Mercedes as the McLaren moves back through the order.
The McLaren had better grip on the mediums, and Russell is running the hards to be fair.
No further investigation for Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen had briefly been noted by Race Control but he’s very quickly cleared by the stewards room for that Lap 1 move.
He can now kick on as he aims to preserve his 1.1 second gap to Oscar Piastri behind.
Lap 5/57: Albon down to seventh
Alex Albon’s not having the greatest restart, Carlos Sainz has also picked off his teammate for sixth place in this Miami Grand Prix.
Replays show Lewis Hamilton using his many years of wisdom to set up and overtake Isack Hadjar for 11th, a smart move from the Ferrari.
Lap 3/57: Green flag – We’re back racing
Jack Doohan’s car has been cleared and we’re back to racing action in Miami as Max Verstappen leads ahead of Kimi Antonelli with Oscar Piastri just behind…
But not for much longer as the McLaren blasts past the Mercedes shortly after the restart.
Lando Norris also picks off Alex Albon for fifth as he aims to work his way back up through the field.
Lap 2/57: Virtual Safety Car deployed for Doohan
Jack Doohan is out of the F1 2025 Miami GP after hitting Liam Lawson into Turn 1, an unfortunate racing incident between the pair on Lap 1 in Florida.
Lawson is running 19th for RB now. It’s bad news for both of them in what could have been a promising race for two drivers needing a result.
LIGHTS OUT IN MIAMI: Verstappen forces Norris off
Max Verstappen nails his start off the line but locks up into Turn 1 and as the Red Bull scampers across the track, he forces Lando Norris off!
The McLaren drops all the way down to sixth in the running order as Kimi Antonelli in the Mercedes moves up to second.
Jack Doohan in the Alpine has a puncture and drops him to the back of the field, that’s the last thing he needed.
FORMATION LAP BEGINS
Max Verstappen leads the cars away at the F1 2025 Miami GP for the formation lap.
Lights out is moments away.
Who will win the Grand Prix?
Strategies for the F1 2025 Miami GP
Here’s how the drama could play out strategically if it stays dry – and that’s a big if, with thunderstorms hanging around Florida.
Mercedes’ George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton start on hards, along with Liam Lawson, Nico Hulkenberg, Fernando Alonso, Oliver Bearman and Pierre Gasly.
Everyone else is on the mediums.

Your grid for the F1 2025 Miami GP
It’s Max Verstappen on pole position ahead of Lando Norris as Red Bull do battle with McLaren once again.
Alpine’s Pierre Gasly chooses to start from the pit lane.
But where does everyone else begin the 57-lap-long race?
Patient Lando Norris willing to wait to pass Verstappen
After 2024, Lando Norris could do with a good getaway at the F1 2025 Miami GP to overtake Max Verstappen into Turn 1.
But if he can’t? It’s no big deal says the McLaren star, who is willing to bide his time.
“I’m all good. It’s a long race,” Norris tells Sky Sports F1. Many opportunities.
“It will be nice to get him off the line. If not, we will see after that.”
Dry conditions but far from easy says Sainz
Drivers will begin the F1 2025 Miami GP on slick tyres, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.
There’s still standing water on the track and Carlos Sainz warns it could still pose a risk across 57 laps.
“There are just a couple of patches of water under bridges,” Sainz told Sky Sports F1. “And if the water is in the wrong moment then it’s in the middle of the corner.
“It’s quite tricky, but should be getting dry now. Very physical race if it doesn’t rain, very humid. but we’re here for that.”
No rain… For the moment
It’s a dry track at the Miami International Circuit as the rain goes away… For the moment.
Drivers will be starting on the softs, but the wet conditions could return later on and throw chaos into the mix up and down the order.
Check out what happened on Lap 13 alone in Saturday’s Sprint.
It’s lights out and away Lego
Formula 1’s famous drivers parade takes a new look at the F1 2025 Miami GP as Lego hand all 10 teams their own cars for the lap.
But even here, they can’t resist going racing and bumping wheels…
Alpine and McLaren will be thankful this doesn’t count towards the cost-cap budget.
Check out how Max Verstappen pipped Lando Norris to pole
Barely anything could split Red Bull’s Max Verstappen from McLaren’s Lando Norris as the defending world champion aims to haul himself back into the picture.
He secured pole on Saturday, but just how exactly did he do it?
Fireworks into Turn 1?
Turn 1 has been the drama point at the F1 2025 Saudi Arabian GP and again in the Miami GP Sprint Race, so will we see it once again in the Grand Prix?
Here’s how McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli duelled it out on Saturday.
